Responsibilities to Anticipate for this role
  • Work manufacturing process technology development efforts focusing on welding, plate processing, and material advancements.
  • Support new material characterizations (armor steel, armor aluminum, titanium, magnesium, stainless steel...), and welding of such materials.
  • Lead manufacturing continuous improvement activities focused on reducing vehicle costs and operator safety.
  • Support production programs with a focus on welding and overall fabrication of combat vehicle structures.
  • Support suppliers with weld related issues.
  • Ensure GDLS is utilizing latest technologies available out in industry.
  • Develop, support and execute research and development efforts of process technology advancements to position GDLS to meet current and future requirements.
  • Develop future major equipment planning including evaluations of detail equipment, writing of equipment specifications, alternate solution analysis, ROI analysis, and strategic planning to ensure GDLS is positioned to sustain current and future production requirements.
  • Resolve / assist in resolution of plants' or supplier manufacturing issues
  • Assist plants on process bids, process launches, and production (welding is main focus)
  • Work with engineering to resolve design and processing issues
  • Develop into a division subject matter expert for welding armor materials
  • Participate in virtual builds of different subsystems / system to identify potential areas of improvement and process requirements along with proposes process solutions
  • Prepare weekly / monthly progress reports, to include presentations to SHC & GDLS management of programs status, successes and issues
  • Participate in the development of project schedules, including material need dates and schedule to be able to incorporate changes.
  • Monitor project schedules, requirements, progress, and delivery dates for all efforts including program and project efforts. Develop recovery plans in conjunction with plants and leadership.

Qualifications Sought
  • Bachelor of Science in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, or other with applicable experience
  • Must be capable of handling large projects from planning, scheduling, and budget development
  • Must be capable of having ability to support plants and division for analysis, planning and execution of future major equipment purchases
  • Must be capable of have understating GDLS products and internal processes
  • Must have an understanding of various manufacturing processes.
  • Must have the ability to analyze processes for efficiency, manpower requirements, & recommend improvements
  • Must be able to interface with Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain Management, Production, Suppliers, & others
  • Excellent Leadership & communication skills required
  • Ability to function in a team-based environment
  • Knowledge of CAD based system, Pro-E / NX preferred, to navigate designs
  • Must be able to review designs using a model based systems. Knowledge must be sufficient to interrogate models, view GD&T, etc.
  • Knowledge/understanding of various materials, aluminum, steel, & titanium
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills required to interface with internal & external engineering organizations as well as the ability to work alone in a self-motivated environment
  • Low to Moderate travel required (5%-20%); Passport may be required. Will require routine travel to Lima, OH from Sterling Heights, MI
  • Computer skills with Window based PC systems & associated software
  • Prefer to have GD&T knowledge and ability to read drawings.
  • Prefer to have processing knowledge to allow linkage of GD&T requirements to processes along with predicting if processes can meet GD&T requirements
  • Must be capable of receiving security clearance
