The Work You Will Do:
This posting is for an Engineering Specialist III position located at the Department of Environmental Protection's Southwest District Office, in Temple Terrace.
This is an intermediate level engineering position that involves technical review of permit applications to ensure compliance with applicable Department rules and statutes to these areas. Actively supports and works toward fulfilling the Agency's Affirmative Action objectives.

Where You Will Work:
The Southwest District Office is located in Temple Terrace, a small city just outside of Tampa. Tampa is close to the Gulf Coast with beautiful white sand beaches. It is considered a major business center while also known for its museums and cultural offerings. Places such as the Busch Gardens Theme Park, historic Ybor City with its many restaurants and nightlife, the world's longest continuous sidewalk along Bayshore Blvd., and a sports enthusiast haven are just some of the many activities people can enjoy in the area. Your Specific Responsibilities:
In carrying out the duties of this position, the incumbent is expected at all times to be aware of and abide by the Department's Standards of Conduct, as well as any and all departmental and/or work unit rules, directives, policies, procedures, and/or general orders applicable to performing the duties of this position.
This is an intermediate level engineering position that involves technical work in the Permitting Program. This position is responsible for the engineering evaluation of permits and other permitting program documents in the District Permitting and Waste Cleanup Program and the application of Department rules and statutes in these areas. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Reviews and evaluates permit applications or documents for conformance to state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Produces low to moderately complex permits and/or documents and requests for additional information, when required, that are consistent with prescribed rules and department guidance and procedures.
  • Performs site inspections, as necessary, in support of permit application reviews and evaluations.
  • Writes requests for additional information, permits, and review documents within time frames provided in Department rules, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of required data and system information into agency databases and Oculus.
  • Ensures that the data entry corresponding to all assigned projects is entered into the Department's databases and Oculus timely and appropriately, consistent with standard operating procedures.
  • Provides technical assistance to the compliance assurance program.
  • Initiate stormwater management enforcement actions as assigned.
  • Provides regulatory assistance, such as outreach, permitting determinations and exemptions, to permittee and/or company representatives, other department programs, delegated local programs, and other interested parties.
  • Participates in training activities as required. Assists with training of entry-level staff as requested by supervisor.
  • Performs related work as required by supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of terminology, principles and analytical techniques of engineering processes.
  • Knowledge in analyzing and interpreting engineering design, calculations, and data.
  • Skills in using engineering tools, equipment and/or instruments.
  • Ability to perform engineering field inspections
  • Ability to monitor and inspect engineering projects.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific or technical reports and supporting documentation.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable regulations, policies and procedures relating to permitting programs.
  • Ability to determine work priorities and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and leadership.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of four years.
Other Job Related Requirements for this position:
