Title: Electro-optical Engineer
Overview:
The Directed Energy Weapons Department at KORD is seeking an electro-optical engineer with experience working on directed energy (DE) laser weapon or similar systems. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with strong written and verbal communication and proficiency in analytical skills. The individual is also a motivated self-starter and participant in professional and community activities. The ideal candidate will be technically sound and committed to innovative, cost-effective solutions for DE laser system development. The candidate will work with other engineers to support the design, development, integration, and verification of laser systems. Duties will include:
- Developing laser system requirements
- Modeling, preparation, assembly, troubleshooting, installation and checkout
- Test data reduction and analysis
- Supporting technical reviews
- Creating optical testing layouts
- Diagnosing technical issues and implementing effective solutions
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of 10 years of experience with at least 3 years of experience with laser systems.
- Experience in the development, integration, test and production of EO, IR and laser systems.
- Industry knowledge of existing laser systems and research areas.
- Develop specifications, tolerances, and tests for fiber laser systems and have an appreciation of safety aspects and requirements of High Energy Laser systems.
- Ability to travel and work at government test facilities for periodic time frames.
- Design, assembly, integration and test of laser weapon system beam directors.
- Understanding of geometric optics.
- Working knowledge of contamination, cleaning processes, and impacts in laser systems.
- Metrology and common test equipment for laser alignment.
- Ability to independently set up and perform optical and laser system tests.
- An active, or ability to obtain, U.S. Security Clearance.
Desired Skills:
- Ability to research and develop advanced laser concepts.
- Proficiency modeling, analyzing, and simulating laser system function and performance.
- Experience using ZEMAX, MATLAB, MODTRAN, HELCoMES, SolidWorks, NV-IPM, LabVIEW, CREO, and HELEEOS.
- Perform end-to-end kill chain analysis.
- Combining lasers using spectral, spatial or coherent techniques.
- Experience with the verification of laser induced damage thresholds (LIDT) of high energy laser optics.
- Experience with control systems for beam direction and auto alignment.
- Industry knowledge of laser optic coatings and performance, including LIDT.
- Hands on experience with design, integration & test of laser weapon systems (greater than 5kW output).
- Parametric modeling of spectral laser beam combination with diffraction gratings.
- Laser safety in accordance with ANSI Z136.1 or similar.
- Skilled with interferometers, wavefront sensors, and near-field, far-field and thermal imaging techniques.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with emphasis on optics, optical engineering, or lasers.
