Job Requirements / Description
Job Description
CSI Recruiting is working with a well-established and highly regarded upstream petroleum consulting firm in Dallas on their immediate need for an experienced and capable Reservoir Engineer. Our client is a stable, privately-owned firm that has grown since its inception into one of the top oil & gas consulting firms in the world.
The reservoir engineer role is a crucial role within this company's organization. The firm's clients place immense trust in their technical staff to provide the highest quality engineering services, on which their staff, boards of directors, and investors rely heavily. The Reservoir Engineer will join a Team, which typically consist of 2 to 4 engineers and 3 to 6 analysts. The firm's Teams maintain a talented pool of analysts to assist in data loading, data manipulation, and report preparation; typically there is a ratio of at least one analyst per engineer in the firm. The Reservoir Engineer will also work closely with the geoscience teams as needed on specific projects. Initially, the Reservoir Engineer will be assigned existing clients and work with the other engineers on the team to learn our economics systems, work processes, philosophies, team dynamics, etc. Eventually, the Engineer will cultivate their own jobs and will have the opportunity to work on job assignments that match their interests and skill sets. Travel requirements, both domestic and international, vary by team and by the types of clients each team cultivates. The Engineer's desire for travel will be strongly considered.
The firm's Reservoir Engineers thrive on learning new skills and working on diverse projects. Moreover, the candidate will learn and develop the "soft skills" that make for an effective consultant such as interpersonal skills, managing client relations and expectations, judgment on appropriate reserves categories and classifications, commercial awareness, and business savvy. They should be comfortable working with and presenting to all levels of professionals from technical and financial experts to senior executives and board members.
The primary projects and tasks under the responsibility of the reservoir engineer include:
  • Technical and economic evaluation of oil and gas assets using a variety of engineering and economic methods.
  • Reserves estimation using performance analysis, analogy, volumetric calculations, and material balance techniques, as appropriate.
  • Presentation of evaluations to all levels (from asset engineer to CEO) within client company, with a focus on the data used to support his/her estimates and opinions.
  • Preparation of reports ranging from simple letter reports to annual reports for SEC filings to complex Competent Persons Reports for international filings or IPOs. Requires adherence to internal company guidelines and industry standards.
  • Educating clients on requirements and limitations of specific reserves definitions (PRMS, SEC, COGEH, etc.), and making recommendations regarding additional data that could justify additional reserves volumes or categorization upgrades.
The successful Reservoir Engineer candidate will be an independent, entrepreneurially-driven, motivated engineer, who wants to build and run their own business within the firm's overall structure. They will have the opportunity to develop their career in a variety of challenging assignments and will develop at a much faster pace than is typical of most E&P companies. The candidate's career and responsibilities will develop towards a lucrative track as an officer and shareholder in the firm over time. A career with the firm can be very rewarding, technically challenging, and financially superior to typical major E&P company career paths and compensation programs.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates selected will have an undergraduate engineering degree from a recognized institution with a minimum of 5 years experience in upstream oil and gas exploration and production, ideally gained at a major oil and gas company or large independent. They should have at least 3 years of reservoir engineering experience with some time devoted to reservoir simulation and exposure to oil field operations. They should be considered a high performer by management, consistently exceeding expectations and ranked in the top 25% of their peer group. Ideally, experience will involve a series of unique assignments with increasing responsibility and will involve direct experience with:
  • Oil and gas field surveillance, including volumes forecasting, production analysis, and evaluation of workover opportunities.
  • Development planning for oil and gas fields, including selection, planning, and execution of drilling programs, evaluation of recovery factors, construction of depletion plans, analysis of improved recovery projects, and project economics.
  • Reserves estimation using performance analysis, analogy, volumetric calculations, reservoir simulation, and material balance techniques.
  • Single-well and multi-well reservoir simulation in conventional and unconventional assets using industry-standard software packages.
  • Economic analysis of both well-level and field-level projects, with a focus on investment decisions, project risk, and outcome uncertainty.
An MBA and/or other advanced degree would be a plus but is not a prerequisite.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Candidates must have the ability to handle multiple projects at one time, while working in a team environment comprised of top caliber colleagues representing the disciplines of reservoir engineering, geology and geophysics, petrophysics, operations engineering, and technical support. Successful professionals within the firm have the following personal and professional characteristics:
  • A rising, intelligent, very hands-on, driven professional who understands, or wishes to develop an understanding of, the total business process, the "nuts and bolts" of the energy industry, the financials behind decisions, and enjoys doing the technical work in addition to working as the project manager.
  • An individual with a sense of urgency and a commitment to achieve coupled with the highest levels of personal and professional integrity. One who brings exceptional business ethics and sound judgment to work assignments.
  • An inquisitive, curious, quantitative, and analytical thinker who can assess data and decode and decipher it into relevant information.
  • A friendly and open individual who is, and would be described by others, as credible, competent, and trustworthy, both inside and outside the company.
  • A proven leader for their level of experience, without an ego who does not have to prove himself/herself but gets involved and shares in success. A team-oriented leader who gets "buy-in" from all appropriate parties. One who can, or wishes to develop the skills to mentor, coach, and work through people.
  • Has passion and enthusiasm for their work and is driven to get the job done right.
  • Possesses strong technical competence and has a track record of success appropriate to their experience level. Someone capable or willing to apply the right tools for the tasks at hand.
  • Someone who readily generates ideas, shows creativity and ingenuity, and provides results.
  • An excellent communicator, capable of conveying ideas and concepts to others, especially to the client. As a consultant, you should not only have strong technical skills but also have refined presentation, communication, and leadership skills. You should also be able to thrive on variety of work and in developing strong client relationships.
  • Must be a team player and accustomed to working in a team environment.
  • A confident individual willing to present his/her opinions and supportive evidence. Will learn to communicate well at all levels. One who will learn to challenge conventional thinking, stand up for his/her ideas and convictions, and think creatively, but one who will also support final decisions and strategies.

COMPENSATION:
The compensation package is designed to attract and retain the top people in the industry and includes a competitive base salary and bonus package that includes an annual bonus (tied to each person's contribution to the firm and its clients), Christmas bonus and April 15th bonus, and ultimately a potential "partnership" as an officer and shareholder in the firm.
