Engineering Librarian for Data and Collections

The Stanford Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative, dynamic, outgoing and service-oriented Engineering Librarian to provide outstanding research, instruction, and collection services to the School of Engineering and other allied Programs and Departments. As a member of the Terman Engineering Library team, the Engineering Librarian will take a team approach to engaging with faculty, staff and students to develop and provide innovative research services, and will report to the Head of Terman Engineering Library.

About the Position:

The Engineering Librarian for Data and Collections will report to the Head of Terman Engineering Library. This position provides strong interdisciplinary support for faculty and students in the School of Engineering, its Departments and Institutes, Labs and Centers. As a member of an interdisciplinary team of science and engineering librarians in the Science and Engineering Resource Group (SERG), the Data and Collections Librarian is responsible for assessing, acquiring, and managing collections for the Engineering Library to support research and instruction in a highly interdisciplinary environment. This position will also work with researchers to identify, curate, manage, and make accessible data that is relevant to engineering research in all its stages.

Core Duties:

  1. Provides assessment and analytics for the Library Information Budget for the Engineering Library.
  2. Works with the Senior Associate University Librarian for Collections and Public Services (AUL), Science & Engineering Libraries, and the Head of Terman to plan and oversee the Engineering materials budget ($2.35M in FY'24); works with SERG leadership, Acquisitions, and Digital Collections Librarian on eBook, database, and serial licensing agreements.
  3. Monitors expenditures for the Engineering base and endowment funds, ensuring the timely expenditure of funds and sound fiscal management of the budget.
  4. Conducts assessments of Engineering materials collections, ensuring they remain up to date in accordance with the needs of the School of Engineering and allied programs.
  5. Develops innovative ways to integrate digital information resources into library services and products.
  6. Identifies and proposes digitization, web archiving, and gift opportunities. Works with AUL, Science & Engineering, Digital Library Systems and Services (DLSS) and others to negotiate funding and collection projects.
  7. Evaluates new resources for possible purchase or digital capture.
  8. Supports interdisciplinary work through close coordination of collection development efforts with other bibliographers.
  9. Serves as selector in assigned areas.
  10. Works closely with Acquisitions Department, Digital Collections Librarian, and DLSS.
  11. Works with the School of Engineering to provide support for management of research-related data through all lifecycle stages.
  12. Identifies relevant datasets for use in research and teaching; works with Acquisitions and Research Data Services (RDS) to acquire applicable datasets.
  13. Assists with preparation of data management plans, data curation, and data deposits.
  14. Promotes contribution to the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR), provides assistance in depositing materials into the SDR, and serves as a liaison between the School of Engineering, DLSS and the Scientific Data Librarian.
  15. Provides reference and research support.
  16. Acts as principal liaison with engineering donors; works with Library Development to expand donor support for Engineering.
  17. Assists in the provision of outreach services, especially in regard to collection issues.
  18. Participates in instructional activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience (at Librarian 1 level):

· Advanced degree in information science, library science, engineering, or a related discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries or a combination of education and relevant experience. College-level coursework or relevant work experience in an engineering discipline or related field preferred.

Education and Experience (at Librarian 2 level):

· Advanced degree in information science, library science, engineering, or a related discipline. College-level coursework or relevant work experience in an engineering discipline or related field preferred. Three or more years of experience in an academic library, or similar expertise dealing with information mediation.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (at Librarian 1 level):

  • Practical knowledge of the literature in engineering is required.
  • Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with faculty, students, and library staff is required. Ability to perform effectively in and contribute successfully to a diverse workplace environment is also required.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to manage time and multiple projects in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, creative, and innovative attitude.
  • Experience with markup and/or programming languages (e.g., SML, SGML, XML, SQL, PERL, Python, Ruby, R, etc.) is highly desired.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and demonstrated ability to work effectively with users and colleagues.

In addition to the above, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (at Librarian 2 level):

  • Work experience with collection development, including budget management, collection evaluation. Strong experience with digital library materials. (Desired: experience with negotiating contracts for digital books or journals.)
  • Demonstrated work experience with institutional repositories, digitization and access projects, or data management/curation.
  • Demonstrated record of innovation in developing, implementing or promoting digital information systems or services.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate digital collections into library services.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
  • Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position at the Librarian 1 level is $81,456-98,456 per annum. Expected pay range at the Librarian 2 level is $90,524-$111,280 per annum.
