GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Director of Design and Engineering is responsible for managing the Design and Engineering Department and schedule, both internal and external, as well as communicating and implementing standard policies and procedures as they are developed. The Director will work closely with the Director of Technology Integration on the development and implementation of technological advancements. The Director reports to the Vice President of Design & Engineering.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Monitor incoming work and, with input from the Drafting Managers, prioritize and set a course of action to produce said work using either internal and external resources.
  2. Assist the VP with input regarding staff levels.
  3. Work closely with Sales and Project Management to monitor both incoming and ongoing projects.
  4. Conduct performance reviews for the D&E team and assist the VP with compensation reviews.
  5. Evaluate outsource firms and establish a formal document outlining expectations, schedules, change order policies, etc.
  6. Work with Drafting Managers to establish staff performance expectations.
  7. Work with the Technology Integration team to update and maintain the Standard Practices Manual.
  8. Work with outsource firms to communicate the Standard Practices Manual.
  9. Ensure Standard Practices, Policies, and Procedures are being followed.
  10. Have an understanding of all trades required in a building project and their effect on precast components.
  11. Be skilled at problem solving and have the ability to minimize or avoid problems or conflicts between our company and contractors or owners.
  12. Be able to meet with architects, engineers, contractors, and owners at project progress meetings, and relay information gained back to Drafting and Engineering.
  13. Monitor production schedules and inform Project Management if delays are possible that will impact the schedule.
  14. Be familiar with all company products, applications, and capabilities.
  15. Be able to read construction documents and relay concerns to the design team.
  16. Be able to work with AutoCad, Revit, and other related software programs.
  17. Be able to converse with department heads, architects, engineers, contractors, and clients.
  18. Monitor submittal drawing schedules and ensure they are submitted in advance of production dates.
  19. Have a deep understanding of the precast industry.
  20. Work with accounting on departmental annual budgets.
  21. Monitor departmental project costs related to project budgets.
  22. Constantly monitor processes & practices and provide ideas/solutions to improve efficiencies, project outputs, and departmental culture.
  23. Be a team leader and work diligently to improve culture, skill sets, and talent of the department.
  24. Work with the Talent Acquisition team to recruit new talent.
  25. Serve as the division’s liaison to local universities.
  26. Complete special projects as requested and perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.
  2. 5+ years of precast experience required.
  3. Must have interpersonal skills to interact with co-workers, customers, and contractors.
  4. Ability to train and coach other employees.
  5. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
  6. Proficient with drafting (Revit) and engineering (Eriksson) software platforms.
  7. Must be able to lead a team with respect and dignity.
  8. Must be motivated and self-driven to complete a task.
  9. Ability to travel with some overnights.
  10. Understand and accept changes that are implemented to become Best in Class.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  2. Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for typing, filing, and using office equipment.
  3. Visual acuity and ability to read small print.
  4. Hearing acuity and ability to communicate effectively with others.
  5. Ability to lift and move office supplies and equipment.
  6. Mobility and ability to move around the office as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Moderate risk of exposure to unusual elements due to production facility and construction site varying conditions.
  2. Moderate risk of safety precautions due to construction site varying conditions.
  3. General Office Environment.
