MITRE’s Artificial Intelligence Innovation Center's Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department is an innovative team of engineers focused on the development of cutting-edge autonomous systems, robotics capabilities, and AI solutions for a safer world.
The Robotics and Autonomous Systems Department has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer. Your experience will allow you to influence research directions; evaluate the challenges and potential solutions for designing, developing, and fielding machine learning solutions; assess the adequacy and maturation of existing research programs and shape their technical and programmatic direction; and identify new areas where research and development are needed to strengthen the nation’s growing machine learning capabilities.
The right candidate will enjoy a fast-paced team environment, a broad array of challenging problems, and an opportunity to work with advanced technologies from across the field of autonomy and will serve a critical role in enabling advanced autonomy capabilities both for our sponsors as well as internal efforts at MITRE.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Work on, or lead, a team to develop and implement ML and deep learning algorithms.
- Develop and use modern software engineering techniques to develop ML-related software.
- Maintain knowledge of advances of ML capabilities in industry and academia.
- Develop, propose and execute research in the field of ML.
- Develop and propose new research directions in ML-enabled systems in support of MITRE’s internal research program and sponsor’s research programs.
- Evaluate ML solutions and compare to sponsor requirements and needs.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
- Ability to articulate ML-specific challenges, discuss critical issues, and identify gaps.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) along with ability to foster relationship development with sponsors.
- Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, languages, platforms, systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and with a team.
- Experience with programming languages such as C++ and Python.
- Familiarity with state-of-the-art technology.
- This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD degree in artificial intelligence or related discipline w/ 8+ years of experience in defining, developing, and deploying ML solutions.
- Active DoD Secret clearance.
