Description
This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to be part of a high performing Process Scale-up and Innovation (PSI) team, with the responsibility for leading scale up and commercialization of new films. The role offers ample opportunity to leverage fundamental polymer science, engineering, and project execution leadership to understand the key transformations to successfully scale up new films.
In this role they will be responsible for establishing film manufacturing process parameters for full scale production, developing material processing capabilities with scale-up laws, and researching new process technologies for new product development work in the pipeline. The candidate will participate in cross functional team/s facilitating scale-up of various products and translating learnings from pilot lines to production.
This position is an excellent opportunity for a self-motivated, detail-oriented individual to perform pilot line activities and, interface with R&D and production teams while executing processing projects as part of the R&D group of a fast-growing company. This role is a hands-on position with a strong presence on the scale up manufacturing floor. This position will report to the Senior Manager of Scale Up and Innovation Process. It will require travel between Portage and LaPorte, Indiana manufacturing sites with minimal travel to Chicago (link shown below).

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead scale up process on MonoSol pilot lines.
- Develop and establish processing techniques & capabilities utilizing MonoSol's innovation process and tools.
- Develop process (PFS) and transformation flow sheets (TFS) critical to material processing.
- Recommend and evaluate new processing equipment/instrumentation.
- Utilize advanced data interpretation methods to evaluate new and existing processes to meet internal and external customer requirements.
- Analyze, evaluate and develop intellectual property.
- Develop scale-up risk assessments, including safety risks, in collaboration with formulation team and process engineering team throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Collaborate locally and globally with fellow scientists, engineers, operations, sales, and marketing team members on development projects.
- Leverage external sources of innovation, including Kuraray's R&D capabilities, to develop technologies for new processes.
- Provide coaching and guidance on process development tasks to scale-up process engineers and scale-up operation team.
- Requires a flexible work style and travel as necessary to perform assignments.
- MS or PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Polymer or Chemical or Material Engineering with 7+ years of manufacturing/process experience.
- 7+ Years of polymer processing experience with knowledge of compounding, mixing, film and/or sheet manufacturing, and demonstrated experience in material scale-up from lab to production.
- Strong expertise in polymer film processing, mixing, casting, drying, winding, formation, stability, and associated phenomena. Additional experience in printing and coating is a plus.
- Preferred understanding of polymer fundamentals and material structure-property relationships and knowledge of polymer spectroscopic, thermo-mechanical and alternative analytical/characterization techniques.
- Strong team-oriented professional with good interpersonal skills who is hands-on with a high energy approach to work leveraging analytical and problem solving skills.
- Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt certification a plus but not required; demonstrated understanding of basic statistics for Six Sigma process and lean manufacturing principles.
- Familiarity with Python, Minitab, JMP or similar statistical tools is a plus.
- Must have excellent organizational skills and be capable of working independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly, effectively, and frequently (oral and written) both to senior management, customers and associates.
