JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Fluidic Telescope Research Engineer

BELONG. CONNECT. GROW. with KBR.

Around here, we define the future. We are a company of innovators, thinkers, creators, explorers, volunteers, and dreamers. But we all share one goal: to improve the world responsibly and safely.

The Fluidic Telescope (FLUTE) project is working on a space observatory mission concept with a large-aperture (50-meter) unsegmented primary mirror suitable for a variety of astronomical applications. The mirror would be created in space via a novel approach based on fluidic shaping in microgravity. This technique has been successfully demonstrated in a laboratory neutral buoyancy environment, in parabolic microgravity flights, and aboard the International Space Station (ISS). It is theoretically scale-invariant and has produced optical components with superb, sub-nanometer (RMS) surface quality. The project team includes personnel from NASA Ames and NASA GSFC, as well as the Technion Israel Institute of Technology through a Space Act Agreement.

KBR is seeking two fluidic telescope research engineer interns to support the development of a mission concept for a space observatory based on fluidic shaping, by focusing on the following objectives:

  1. Investigate ionic liquid reflectivity enhancements
  2. Support development of liquid mirror surface disturbance and tidal effects models.
  3. Conduct experimental study of the thermal Marangoni effect in ionic liquids.
  4. Participate in 50-meter telescope concept development.
  5. Participate in the technology demonstration mission concept development.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Engineering and currently enrolled in a MS or higher degree program
  • Background in Chemistry and Physics: Thermal Systems, Fluid Mechanics, Experimental Physics.

Other Desired Skills:

  • Understanding of the thermal Marangoni effect in ionic liquids.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.

Basic Compensation:

$20.50/hr - $27.50/hr (This range is for the California area only)

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.
