At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers and specialists, you will be responsible for developing and supporting the New Glenn rocket composite manufacturing processes. You will directly support New Glenn’s as well as Blue Origin’s success through owning the qualification and build of large-scale composite parts at external vendors, design for manufacturability, non-conformance processing, and development and improvement of process specifications. Throughout the manufacturing process, you will also identify, develop, and deploy methods to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build sequence and schedules.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, lead with a dedication to quality and positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Develop new and robust manufacturing processes and transition into production
  • Create test plans, specifications, and other documentation for the development of flight hardware
  • Support activities to implement new processes and hardware, including tooling and equipment reviews
  • Provide technical guidance to ensure producibility of new hardware
  • Qualify internal and external processes
  • Review documentation to ensure compliance to hardware requirements internally and at external suppliers
  • Work with multi-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world class aerospace hardware
  • Disposition nonconformances and find opportunities for improvements to quality, cost and schedule
  • Coach, mentor and technically assist other engineers
  • Travel to support internal and external production up to 20% of the time

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Chemical, Aerospace Engineering or relevant field from ABET accredited school
  • 8+ years experience with polymer based composite fabrication process development and process qualification
  • Experience with aircraft, launch vehicle, spacecraft, or satellite development, production, or operations, especially laminate/core sandwich structures
  • Experience with design for manufacturing and engineering drawing review
  • Experience working with external vendors
  • Experience with root cause analyses and corrective actions
  • Experience with defining, implementing, or testing composite repairs
  • Experience writing and authoring technical documentation
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD programs (Creo Pro/E & Catia preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills to balance small and large projects with a diverse group of customers
  • Ability to work cooperatively with teams of diverse skills across large geographic distances
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Strong written, personal, technical, and software skills (CAD, Scheduling, Issue Tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with vendor qualification and procedure reviews
  • Experience defining and procuring composite fabrication tooling
  • Higher temperature composite experience (C/C, C/SiC, SiC/SiC etc.)
  • Experience with new facility setup and equipment selection

Compensation Range for WA applicants: $136,467.00-$191,053.80

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.
