The VP of Engineering will lead a team of Hardware, Software and Firmware Engineers on current and next generation product development and be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, reporting directly to the CEO and Board of Directors. You will be expected to lead and grow all functional groups within the Product Engineering teams including hardware, software, firmware, mechanical, and electrical engineering to improve and scale up existing product lines as well as identify, define, develop, and launch future products. You will be expected to help align hardware and R&D spend with working capital and cashflow, as well as support fundraising through direct interaction with the current and potential investors and the Board of Directors. You will be responsible for developing and implementing Engineering and Operational Processes derived from industry standard best practices in a fast-moving, rapidly growing environment. Familiarity with all stages of the product lifecycle from Opportunity Identification through End of Life are a must.
In this role, you will directly lead Engineering efforts beginning with initial architecture studies through proof of concept into NPI and sustaining. This leader will drive technology make/buy decisions and project-level and strategic schedule/budget/resource balancing. Familiarity with Sensing technologies, microelectronics, and IoT communication protocols is critical.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish strategic direction, processes, and OKRs for the Engineering teams.
- Own the P&L for this business.
- Identify resourcing needs to address current and future workstreams and hire internal and external resources as needed to support.
- Prepare for future technologies, product opportunities, and market needs to shape Product Roadmap and value proposition.
- Manage Engineering teams to deliver work outputs to-spec, on-budget and on-schedule.
- Partner with the Operations team to meet business objectives for on time delivery, landed cost, and other operational OKRs.
- Build the highest performing employee team at all levels. Maintain forward leaning human resource practices.
- Light travel: Approx 1-2 trips per quarter to domestic customer locations to collect product and market feedback, inform the technical product roadmap, and assist with new product launches.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Experience working with IoT devices, firmware engineering teams, and board-level electronics
- 10+ years of experience in leadership at a $50+mm company known for engineering excellence and operational rigor.
- A total of 8 years of experience at both large and small companies, supporting launch of products from prototype to mass production utilizing an external contract manufacturing model.
- Demonstrated success in a high growth environment managing both Engineering and Operations teams.
- Engineering degree, graduate degree preferred.
- Outstanding analytical skills and judgment. Skilled at gathering information, developing models, weighing relevant factors, and making decisions based on data, trends, and past experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Asks for and offers help when needed, a committed team player.
