  • PTO is provided to team members as a lump sum allowance, not an accrual. PTO is prorated based on your start date (see table below) on a quarterly basis (with tenure-based increases), 8.75 days of sick leave, 11 federal holidays, their birthday (8 hours), up to 15 days for jury duty, and up to 3 days (24 hours) of bereavement leave per eligible instance.

Our approach to compensation is intended to ensure our total package serves all of your needs and includes base pay, medical and other benefits, performance rewards, 401k matching, plus a few perks (tech and wellness reimbursement programs)! Our salary ranges are determined based on role, level and location and provide team members salary growth within a salary grade over time. Team members automatically progress within a salary range through annual increases (given to reward service at Fearless) or merit increases (given to reward and individual's demonstrated performance and growth within the position). Fearless team members are also eligible for discretionary bonuses based on company performance.

The salary ranges for this position based on location are listed below. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified as a part of our annual salary range review.

  • NC Residents: $103,935 (min) - $135,115 (mid) - $166,296 (max)
  • DE, MD, PA, TX, VA Residents: $109,132 (min) - $141,871 (mid) - $174,610 (max)
  • DC Residents: $122,643 (min) - $159,436 (mid) - $196,229 (max)
  • CA & NY Residents: $126,800 (min) - $164,299 (mid) - $202,881 (max)

The Software Engineer II develops, maintains, and enhances complex software systems that solve customer and user problems. This role brings breadth across software development skills and depth in specific technologies like languages and frameworks that allows them to build effective software solutions. The Software Engineer II shares in the responsibility with other software engineers and team members to deliver maintainable solutions.

Responsibilities And Contributions

Organizational and Leadership Role

  • Coaches and mentors others to develop their professional skills.
  • Takes initiative for their own growth through personal leadership.

Functional Role

  • Responsible for curating the structure of server side information.
  • Write server scripts and API's to be utilized by front side engineers and UX designers.
  • The day-to-day consists of optimizing servers for speed and stability, implementing security structures, generating reusable code libraries and generating data storage solutions.
  • Utilizes experience with architecting, developing and supporting distributed and scalable systems and high-volume transaction applications and services with hands-on coding experience in modern object-oriented language.
  • Decomposes tasks into discrete objectives to serve the strategic direction of the team.
  • Builds software solutions with minimal direction in the form of maintainable code in accordance with the project/organization technical standards.
  • Delivers complete software solutions that function well within the full system including documentation and automated unit/integration tests.
  • Debugs existing software and corrects defects.
  • Performs manual exploratory testing individually and with the team, as appropriate for the project test strategy.
  • Advises the team on specific implementation options that meet business requirements.
  • Contributes actively in team Agile processes through collaboration, discussion, and/or preparation.
  • Provides feedback to improve the team’s technical procedures.
  • Collaborates with other Engineers and Designers to implement features that meet design specifications and deliver business value.
  • Contributes during all phases of the development lifecycle from task creation to production deployment of new code.
  • Coaches others on the team through code reviews.
  • Seeks and engages peer-reviews of tasks and deliverables; coaches others when reviewing their tasks and deliverables.

Must-Have Skills

Essential Skills, Experience, or Competencies

  • Ability to obtain required security clearance for this project: Public Trust.
  • Must have current or previous government experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated Full Stack Development working experience with Kotlin or Java
  • A minimum of 2 years of demonstrated modern Javascript framework experience: React (preferred), Angular, Vue
  • A minimum of 3 years of demonstrated working experience utilizing and developing APIs.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a distributed enterprise environment.
  • Experience working as part of an Agile/Scrum team in a lean environment to routinely deploy changes.
  • Expert in web-development including front-end (browser) and back-end (server) including UI components, client-server integrations, APIs, and data persistence.
  • Ability to discuss abstract software development concepts like single-responsibility, cohesion, data immutability, and other paradigm appropriate design patterns.
  • Demonstrated interest in and ability to learn new systems and technology quickly.
  • Expert in at least one programming language like Node.js, Python, Go, Java 8+, Ruby, etc.
  • Proficient with the industry-leading framework(s) for the programming language expertise (Express.js, Gatsby.js, Django, Flasks, Rails, Spring.io, etc).
  • Proficient with important libraries and technologies in the ecosystem of programming language expertise.
  • Proficient with HTML, Javascript and ability to quickly translate designs into CSS implementations.
  • Proficient with at least one front-end technology like React, Angular, Vue, Ember, Backbone, Svelte.
  • Proficient with building applications in containerized development environments.
  • Expert in with advanced git commands like rebasing, squashing, and cherry-picking.
  • Ability to assist other engineers with source code management in git.
  • Ability to discuss technical tasks and team process topics with team members.
  • Basic understanding of container orchestration technologies like Amazon ECS and Kubernetes.
  • Basic understanding of “serverless” concepts and frameworks like Serverless.com and AWS Lambda.
  • Basic understanding of cloud platforms like AWS.
  • Basic understanding of software infrastructure including network, compute, and data storage resources.
  • Basic understanding of securing systems on the application, network, and infrastructure layers.
  • Ability to operate and manage work, strategically reason, and build relationships and influence others.

Icing-on-the-Cake Skills

  • BS/MS/MEng in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or similar technology-related degree.
  • Experience working with government or large industry clients.
  • Holds a current AWS Certified Developer Associate, Solutions Architecture Associate, or Solutions Architect Professional or similar certification in another cloud platform.
  • Holds a current Certified Scrum Master certification.
  • Holds a current CompTIA Security+ certification.
