About the Team
The Engineering Team consists of Product Engineers and CAD Specialists working together and closely with other departments, for the design, engineering, analysis, and documentation of products, systems, structures, materials, and projects, small and simple to large and complex that fulfill objectives and requirements.
About the Role
Product Engineers may work on Engineered-to-Order (ETO) or New Product Development (NPD) projects within the Engineering team.
You are responsible for providing timely and thoughtful design solutions for the unique and sometimes evolving requirements of the current project, including due dates or design data requests. You will review criteria, identify, and analyze opportunities and solutions, apply analysis, and design the most optimal product. Additionally, you will create or oversee the creation of submittal drawings, production drawings, and any other design documents necessary.
More than anything else, you will be responsible for ensuring that our product designs are robust, optimized around DfX principles, compliant to the project scope and all other applicable requirements, and fully and clearly documented for various internal and external stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Creates design solutions of manufacturable products that meet engineering standards, project objectives, and user requirements, ensuring on-time completion to the projects due-dates.
- Performs design work including data research, feasibility, and costing studies.
- Consistently, and sometimes quickly, solve complex problems with simple cost-effective solutions.
- Stay organized in a fast-paced, open team environment, while working on multiple projects in varying stages and at various levels of development.
- To continuously identify, recommend and/or undertake activities and methods to make positive contributions to the company goals and initiatives within the scope of the position.
- Stay current with Tournesol manufacturing capabilities and to provide support for manufacturing/production implementation.
- Travel to installation locations and/or other Tournesol locations may be required on rare occasions.
Skills
- Ability to self-manage and to work to due dates.
- Understanding of engineering principles and processes and how to effectively apply them to the creation of products, including but not limited to: DfX (Design for X: Manufacture/Assembly/Cost/Quality/Sustainability), structural calculations, prototyping and assembly, physical testing.
- Finite element analysis (SolidWorks simulation preferred)
- 3D parametric and master modeling, drawing/BOM creation.
- Experience with outdoor product design is a plus.
- Excellent 3D CAD skills: SolidWorks preferred, Inventor or another platform o.k. as well.
- Good 2D CAD skills: AutoCAD preferred.
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes: Sheet metal, tubular steel, welding, machining, and forming, extruding (plastic and metal), fiberglass composites, lightweight concrete, plastic thermoforming, plastic molding, and wood working.
- Strong communication skills. Written and verbal.
- Experience navigating and working in a manufacturing facility.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer. Work will require individual to enter plant areas where performance factors such as: heat, noise, dust, lifting of materials, and working around equipment will be encountered.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets. The pay range for this position is $70,000 - $85,000 annually. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on tenure, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
