Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world’s challenges. An independent organization of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.
Our Applied Science practice leverages a unique combination of technologies and expertise to engineer practical solutions to problems of national and international importance. We apply expertise in solid and fluid dynamics, materials science, acoustics, risk assessments, and computational simulation methods to solve complex problems. We perform research, mathematical modeling, software development, and design to manage risks to life safety in military platforms and installations, ships and submarines, critical infrastructure, tall buildings, public facilities, industrial and petrochemical plants, and automotive and airborne vehicles. Military, government, corporate, and academic clients value the validation of Applied Science’s software and the critical insights gained from correlating analysis with testing.
The Role
We have the opportunity for an engineer to join our Applied Science Practice with a focus on decarbonization. This is a full-time opportunity intended for individuals with at least 2 years of experience. The day-to-day role includes direct communication with senior staff working on decarbonization technologies for campuses, power plants, and materials manufacturing (e.g., cement and steel). It also includes R&D into novel decarbonization pathways for net-zero buildings.
Responsibilities
The Engineer is expected to perform analysis and research to address challenging engineering problems as well as develop new methodology to answer first-of-a-kind questions, with the support and guidance of senior staff. The ability to conceptualize first-of-a-kind applications and learn on the fly is a must with the fast pace of commercialization of new technologies and applications. The most important trait for a prospect is the ability and willingness to learn about new ideas in the dynamic decarbonization space. Tasks may include the following:
Preparing conceptual design (utility demand, block flow diagrams, equipment lists, etc.), and integrating systems required to decarbonize data centers, universities, airports, or other campuses.
Using process engineering tools or developing Excel-based calculations to estimate energy production and demand for a myriad of decarbonization systems and technologies.
Researching and interpreting published research, technology data, and engineering studies on decarbonization technologies like carbon capture, hydrogen, battery storage, etc. as well as low embodied carbon technologies like concrete curing, mineralization, net-zero cement, etc.
Documenting the design, development, and/or analysis process in engineering drawings, reports, and presentations, as required.
Communicating and presenting findings to clients and ensuring a clear understanding of project goals, expectations, and results.
Requirements
2+ years' experience in Engineering (Mechanical or Chemical Engineering degrees preferred).
Creative conceptual thinking. Desire and ability to research new technologies and quickly learn new skills to develop a detailed understanding of adjacent areas without structured training; ability to apply these new skills to develop first-of-a-kind solutions.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work closely with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals resulting in the multiplying effect and revenue growth.
