Job purpose

The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world-class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos, fan, and fan drive components for the automotive industry. This position will lead software, controls, electrical, and mechatronic system product development oversight including providing direction for application design and engineering groups leading development and qualification of electrical, mechanical, and mechatronic devices targeted for the automotive industry.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead a global team of dedicated and talented engineers with a focus on team and individual development from both a technical and professional perspective.

  • Budget projections from a physical cost and resourcing standpoint.

  • Maintain accurate team budgeting forecasts.

  • Hiring for direct reports and semi-annual performance reviews for direct and indirect reports.

  • Ensure project planning for all team projects is created and maintained.

  • Guide project engineers to utilize tools and methods from development workbooks.

  • Guide and mentor team on project management techniques as applied to daily and long-term Product Development advanced, core, and application projects.

  • Lead team to develop and implement project tools to optimize project workflow.

  • Lead development and validation of mechatronic and electrical turbocharger components including electric actuators and sensors.

  • Provide “functional expert” knowledge to support various local and global teams: application engineering, test facilities, manufacturing, product quality, purchasing and supply chain.

  • Lead a team to develop and improve analysis methods and simulation tools.

  • Oversee a development team for new and existing electronic & mechatronic turbocharger actuators technology and support existing released components for performance, reliability, and durability requirements.

  • Review Electronic and Mechatronic technical analysis, including performance, hardware, and microprocessor software.

  • Ensure the validation process of electrical or mechatronic turbocharger components and/or assemblies used in gas and diesel engine applications is followed.

  • Review and approve validation test requirements, specifications, plans, and qualification reports for team owned components.

  • Liaise with customers to resolve immediate product quality and determine future product requirements.

  • Lead teams for Root Cause Analysis for any mechatronic or electrical product design or quality issues.

  • Drive suppliers to implement corrective action and develop future component improvements.

  • Lead DFMEA and DVP&R activities.

What we’re looking for

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics, or Electrical Engineering with 10+ years of design and development experience with automotive or industrial mechatronic systems.

  • Self-starter with the ability to organize and lead teams in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to continuously develop high performing teams in a global environment with an encouraging and positive mindset.

  • Mentorship & or direct supervisory experience.

  • Fundamental sound electrical and mechatronic engineering knowledge with the ability to adapt to new environments.

  • Background in product design, development, validation, and/or testing.

  • Strong Project Management skills including the ability to demonstrate logical analysis and clear communication.

  • Ability to create and coordinate engineering development cohesively with teams and individuals in multiple locations/time zones.

  • Ability to manage suppliers and external resources when procuring development hardware or developing new processes.

  • An understanding of mechatronic devices including microcontroller hardware and software, communication interfaces, DC motors; electronic motor drives, servo mechanisms (gears, linkages), and sensors.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to direct testing.

  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and multimeters as well as a basic understanding of electrical safety.

  • Ability to work with project teams as the key technical representative and possesses good communication skills.

  • Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW).

  • Proficient with Microsoft office products — Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.

Preferred:

  • Master of Science with 15+ years of development and/or design with automotive or industrial mechatronic devices.

  • Understanding of the challenges of applying electronic components to engine-compartment applications.

  • Understanding of automotive quality process.

  • Experience leading a team of engineers in a global environment.

  • Experience with electronics, electric motors, engines, or turbochargers.

  • Knowledge of fundamentals of internal combustion engines.
