Position Summary
The Principal Network Engineer position is a hands-on principal-level strategic engineering role accountable for the design, architecture and hands-on implementation of the Bank’s network infrastructure hosted within the AWS cloud as well as some secondary responsibilities ensuring the health of on-premise LAN/WAN networks. This individual assumes the role of subject matter expert (SME) participating as part of project teams for technology solution implementations and will be part of a three-person network engineering team (two principal and one senior network engineer) and works closely within the Bank’s Infrastructure team while collaborating closely with other technology teams. This role also works with the Senior Network Engineer ensuring day-to-day support of the network environments is accomplished providing technical support and/or consultative input as required to enhance the productivity and effectiveness of the Bank’s technology.

Only applicants with experience building production networks inside AWS cloud (VPCs and Transit Gateways) and with strong knowledge of the supporting services (Route 53, Elastic Load Balancing, ALB, etc.) will be considered for this role. This role will be about 80% focused on projects and 20% day-to-day tasks and responsibilities. The ability to grow into a lead role is possible over time.

This role will have a hybrid work schedule in our Boston office in accordance with the Bank’s Hybrid Work Program. More time will be encouraged in the office to support onboarding initially.
Specific Responsibilities
- Champion the Bank’s AWS network infrastructure strategy partnering with the other Principal network engineer and architectural leads to evaluate strategies, research infrastructure and cloud best practices, conduct assessments, identify integration issues, prepare cost estimates and act as the network subject matter expert (SME) on project initiatives.
- Accountability to ensure the LAN/WAN network administration and support is managed properly, partnering with the Senior Network Engineer who is primarily responsible for this support.
- Consult with Information Security on network security requirements, evaluate monitoring and service delivery alternatives and implement solutions.
- Provide production network support as an escalation point for the Senior Network Engineer and the Bank’s applications as they relate to the network.
- Engage in regularly scheduled disaster recovery exercises.
- Analyze system capacity and throughput requirements in response to demand forecasts and operations trends to determine, plan and provide for system capabilities required for projected workloads.
- Provide 24x7 on-call support when necessary, (shared between the three Network Engineers), and carry a bank-issued smart phone to respond to off hours support issues.
- Provide detailed, professional technical design and architectural documentation.

Education
- B.S. degree with a Computer Science related curriculum or equivalent experience is required.
Experience
- Current/prior experience building production networks inside AWS cloud (building out VPCs and Transit Gateways) is required.
- Strong knowledge must be demonstrated for supporting services (Route 53, Elastic Load Balancing, ALB, etc.)
- 5-7 years of network architectural design skills.
- 7-9 years of project participation as a network subject matter expert responsible for network implementation and design.
- 5-7 years of strong firewall administration, configuration and support with a high level of skill administering a Checkpoint environment.
- 5-7 years of AWS networking design and implementation experience.
- 1-3 years of telecom administration and support skills in a Cisco environment preferred.
- Exposure to a financial services or other highly regulated environment preferred.
Knowledge/Skills
- Solid network architectural background with the required hands-on experience working with network technologies within AWS and a fundamental familiarity of Microsoft’s Azure cloud.
- Understand automation methodologies leveraging scripting and continuous development solutions for network implementations within a cloud data center.
- A high level of responsiveness to the customer to build trust and credibility.
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills, specifically the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively within technical and non-technical teams, adapting communication and presentation style for the intended audience.
- Must be a self-starter with excellent planning and organizational skills and can exercise independent judgment while participating in various complex and sometimes concurrent projects from inception through completion.
