This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers (use as appropriate), you will be responsible for identifying materials and processes to increase manufacturability of liquid rocket engine hardware. You'll be expected to develop these materials and processes and qualify them for use on production hardware, ensuring all requirements are met. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

  • Material selection and implementation for turbomachinery and/or valves components.
  • Review drawings for compliance to established requirements.
  • Own material and/or part qualification process for specific components within turbomachinery and valve assemblies.
  • Define and author material and/or process development plan(s) to utilize novel materials and processes on liquid rocket engine hardware.
  • Contribute to the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification.
  • Collaborate closely with design, analysis, manufacturing, and quality to disposition nonconforming hardware.
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years directly related materials and processes work experience.
  • Minimum B.S. in Material Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • Experience directly related to turbomachinery and/or valves including material and process selection, development, scale up for manufacturability, production qualification and sustaining manufacturing support.
  • Experience reviewing and signing engineering drawings as a Materials & Processes Engineer in the aerospace industry.
  • Proven experience on developing new aerospace processes, refining existing ones, running test plans for analysis and qualification of components.
  • Experience with failure and forensic analysis of aerospace hardware
  • Knowledge of industry standards for material data analysis (e.g. MMPDS)
  • Strong written and personal computer skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
Desired:
  • Masters or PhD in Material Science/Engineering or related field
  • Experience in the production, manufacturing, and assembly of rocket propulsion hardware
  • Experience and working knowledge of design and function of liquid rocket engine propulsion assemblies and components.
  • Deep understanding of environmental and thermomechanical behavior of aerospace material systems at wide temperature ranges from cryogenic to elevated.
  • Experience with aerospace quality management systems supporting propulsion hardware.
  • Proven experience managing technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and budgets.
