Pay Range:
$111,804 - $245,544 Annually
$111,804 - $204,636 Annually for the SES.3 level

Job Description
We have two openings for Senior Project Engineers . This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world's most energetic laser. It is an exciting time to join the team that achieved fusion ignition multiple times since December 2022, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.
You will provide technical leadership and expertise for new and ongoing projects for the NIF&PS Directorate. You will be part of teams developing innovative high-power laser components and systems using advanced design and manufacturing techniques for scientific and defense applications. Typical projects require diverse engineering expertise including highly advanced systems engineering; engineering analysis and computational simulation; extreme precision and unique materials; prototype design; state of the art fabrication and assembly; and engineering testing and deployment. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will
- Provide technical guidance and leadership of team members in the execution of their work scope with a focus on defining, developing, and deploying critical systems and components consistent with schedule and budget commitments.
- Provide expertise for engineering relevant subjects and provide technical guidance in the development of solutions to complex problems that may not be well defined.
- Develop and manage schedules and budgets in support of projects and oversee project execution throughout the project lifecycle, including establishing objectives and allocating resources.
- Participate in working groups and design reviews and collaborate in the development of innovative methods and technology.
- Provide training, mentoring, and coaching to team members.
- Prepare, present, and explain written and verbal presentations of technical work, including providing advice to management.
- Maintain and ensure quality standards for deliverables, leveraging team members' skills to successfully complete complex projects.

- Successfully utilize existing work, internal resources, and partnerships to develop innovative capabilities and new approaches and/or to redefine customer requirements that impact organizational operations or directions.

- Manage scope of work that involves many parallel tasks requiring the resolution of conflicting work requirements, as well as prioritization of tasks toward targets.
- Collaborate with sponsors / customers and lead industry partners to address sponsor / customer needs from the Subject Matter Expert (SME) perspective.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or relevant field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience in an engineering relevant discipline with experience in project planning and technical leadership.
- A strong understanding of and experience in developing and qualifying opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical, and/or electro-optical systems.
- Experience developing and implementing solutions to complex problems, including applying technical best practices, theories, concepts, and techniques.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
- Experience interacting and cooperating with all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage small and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Significant and expert level experience in the application and development of technical industry best practices in an innovative and creative fashion.
- Subject matter expert knowledge of, and significant experience in, developing and qualifying opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical, and/or electro-optical systems.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
- Master's degree in Engineering, Laser Science Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, , or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Experience integrating opto-mechanical/electro-mechanical/electro-optical with custom software and controls systems.
- Successful track record of crafting new hardware capabilities and catalyzing innovation to impact the long-term direction of an organization.
- Understanding of a diverse laboratory and national research environment, and the ability to work within that environment towards long-range goals.
