Job Requirements / Description
Position Summary: Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  • Select and set cutting speeds, feed rates, depths of cuts, and cutting tools according to machining instructions or knowledge of metal properties.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, job orders, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products, and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.
  • Establish zero reference points on workpieces, such as at the intersections of two edges or over hole locations.
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Educational and Other Requirements:
  • Vocational training or job-related course work is preferred.
  • Previous work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture.
  • Knowledge of tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Sensitive to confidential information.
  • Must work independently and as a member of team.
Mental and Physical Requirements:
  • Able to read, speak and write English.
  • Strong physical and mental health to maintain demanding workload.
  • Able to work under stressful conditions at times.
  • Communication - verbal and written communication.
  • Climbing - able to go up and down stairs
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Position will require a minimum of 40 hours per week dependent on workload.
