What You'll Do
The Doc Services team is responsible for the core platform providing unified document management and essential document operations, such as document conversion and manipulation, across all Docusign products. As the Director of Engineering for this team, you will define and lead the technical roadmap and strategy for the Doc Services platform, ensuring it is exceptionally reliable, performant and scalable. You will collaborate with engineering leaders across the company, cross-functional partners and key stakeholders to drive the adoption of the Doc Services platform, deliver continuous platform enhancements and create comprehensive product experiences that meet our customers' needs. This role requires a strategic thinker with a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills and a passion for delivering mission critical platforms while successfully balancing business requirements and priorities.
This position is a people manager role reporting to the Vice President of Engineering.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement
- Oversee the architecture, development, and maintenance of scalable platform services
- Manage the development and enhancement of our PDF library and document services, ensuring they meet the needs of our customers
- Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies in document processing and management
- Act as the point of contact for live customer escalations, ensuring prompt and effective resolution
- Establish clear goals, performance metrics, and career development plans for team members
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product Management, different engineering teams to align engineering efforts with business objectives
- Work closely with product teams to define and prioritize features and improvements
- Develop and implement processes to handle escalations efficiently, minimizing customer impact
- Analyze escalation data to identify trends and root causes, driving continuous improvement in product quality and customer satisfaction
- Evolve organizational structure to align with long term initiatives, build strong "5 ingredient" teams with good comms architecture
- Manage technical debt, including long term technical architecture decisions and balance product roadmap

Employee divides their time between in-office and remote work. Access to an office location is required (Frequency: Minimum 2 days per week; may vary by team but will be weekly in-office expectation).
What You Bring
Basic
- BS degree or above in Computer Science
- 15+ years of experience in large scale software development
- 8+ years of hands on software development or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of managing engineering teams over 6 people
- Experience with an OOP language
- Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to motivate teams
- Proven experience in managing and leading engineering teams delivering platform and document services
- Experience in PDF libraries and document processing technologies
- Experience in handling live customer escalations and maintaining high customer satisfaction
Preferred
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
- Prior experience building RESTful web services
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to document management (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA)
Wage Transparency
Pay for this position is based on a number of factors including geographic location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Based on applicable legislation, the below details pay ranges in the following locations:
- California: $195,500.00 - $315,775.00 base salary
- Illinois and Colorado: $186,200.00 - $263,000.00 base salary
- Washington and New York (including NYC metro area): $186,200.00 - $276,125.00 base salary
- Washington DC: $195,500.00 - $276,125.00 base salary
This role is also eligible for bonus, equity and benefits.
