Firehawk Aerospace is a propulsion-focused aerospace and defense company based in the Dallas, TX area. Firehawk is looking for a dedicated and experienced System Safety Engineer to support our mission of creating cutting-edge defense solutions while prioritizing safety and environmental responsibility. The System Safety Engineer will play a crucial role in ensuring that Firehawk Aerospace maintains the highest standards of safety, health, and environmental protection throughout its operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations, as well as industry-specific standards and guidelines to include MIL-STD-882 and other contractual safety requirements.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments of workplace and test range environments, processes, and equipment to identify potential hazards and implement effective mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans, including fire, chemical and hazardous material spills, and other potential emergencies. Conduct drills and training to prepare employees.
  • Manage and oversee environmental compliance, including hazardous material and waste management, air quality, and water quality, to minimize the company's environmental footprint.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations at technical reviews and customer briefings and coordinate and lead System Safety Working Group (SSWG) meetings with both internal and external counterparts.
  • Develop and enforce health and safety policies and procedures, ensuring that employees are well-informed and compliant with safety guidelines at all office and test range locations.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and accidents, providing comprehensive root cause analysis and recommending corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Coordinate and conduct safety training programs for employees, fostering a culture of safety and environmental responsibility.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies, ensuring that Firehawk Aerospace maintains a positive relationship with relevant authorities.
  • Continuously assess and enhance EHS programs, incorporating industry best practices and emerging technologies to ensure the highest level of safety and environmental protection.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant EHS experience in a manufacturing, aerospace, or defense industry setting.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulations and standards.
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-882 and its associated analyses.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and lead by example.
  • Familiarity with emergency response and incident investigation procedures.
  • Knowledge of industry-specific safety standards is a plus.
  • Can work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to make formal presentations to large groups.
  • Interacts well in a team atmosphere with engineers, suppliers, program managers, and customers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH, CHMM) are preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of OSHA-1910.
  • Previous industry experience with OSHA-3912-03.
  • Previous industry experience with NFPA-484.
  • Experience supporting independent government Safety Review Board.
  • Experience developing and implementing a System Safety Program IAW MIL-STD-882.
  • Developing and evaluating system safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with energetic materials and safety.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit and to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds; may require minimal walking, standing for extended amounts of time, climbing, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.

Security Clearance:

May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level. Requires U.S. Citizenship. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.
