Job Description
Primary Function of Position
The Senior Equipment Controls Engineer will be an integral member of Intuitive's AET team. This position is responsible for design, develop, test, qualify, implement and maintain manufacturing equipment and control software that support high-volume manufacturing of Intuitive's Instrument and Accessory product lines. The custom manufacturing equipment employs a wide variety of automated features, including electronic sensing, motion control, robot integration, machine vision, and data collection. This position will play a critical role in introducing new products and scaling manufacturing operations, while improving quality, yield, and efficiency.
The ideal candidate will have experience developing control systems for custom automated equipment from design, through fabrication, to sustained production use, and will have demonstrated proficiency in selection and integration of electronic hardware for control and networking, as well as the creation of associated software. Success in this role will depend on the ability to manage numerous concurrent complex projects while maintaining the highest possible quality standards.

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities
Primary Roles & Responsibilities:
- Establish the optimal controls architecture to perform specific set of operations for custom automated manufacturing and test equipment.
- Define, build, and support control systems for custom equipments. Develop software in collaboration with our Software team to run custom automated equipment, including PLC, HMI, data acquisition, and networking.
- Design, simulate and test control algorithms for electric motors in automation.
- Design and implement Vision models using state-of-the-art techniques and frameworks. Analyze, evaluate, and optimize existing vision systems to improve performance and accuracy.
- Utilize industrial robots (Denso/Fanuc/Epson) in Automation Equipments for specific operations.
- Knowledge of factory intelligence, databases and organization of data. Leverage data acquisition to enable quality measurement tools such as SPC, Six Sigma, and Gage R&R.
- Ensure manufacturing equipment designs meet functional, safety, ergonomic, and documentation requirements, to facilitate efficient production operations.
- Write V&V protocols, lead V&V execution, and write V&V reports for equipment and processes.
- Able to read and understand mechanical drawings and electrical schematic. Able to perform basic wiring and electrical circuit trouble shooting.
- Provide controls-related root-cause analysis and technical support to on-going production operations.
- Specify the control requirements for, and manage the creation of, manufacturing equipment which can be designed and fabricated by third parties.
Skill/Job Requirements:
- Minimum Bachelors in Electrical/Mechanical/Controls/Mechatronics or similar; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 6 years' experience developing control systems for automated manufacturing equipment. Medical device industry experience is a plus.
- Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley preferred), HMI programming (Wonderware preferred), Machine Vision (Cognex preferred) and Motion Control (Copley preferred). Familiarity with C/C++/C#, LabVIEW, MATLAB, Java, and Python.
- Experienced in industrial robot (Denso, Fanuc, Epson) programming.
- Familiarity with pneumatic controls, sensors, vision systems, servos and other actuators.
- Experienced in industrial network performance troubleshooting and optimization.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols, such as EtherNet/IP, Modbus/TCP, EtherCAT and Serial/ASCII.
- Experience managing the development of control systems for complex integrated equipment.
- Proven ability to develop control systems that integrate electronic sensors, actuators, and motion control components to perform mechatronic tasks. Proven track record developing high quality, reliable industrial control systems.
- Ability to travel nationally and internationally. Travel requirements will be approximately 5%.
- Great attitude, eager, willing/able to take initiative, works well with others in team environment.
