The Water Quality Program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Municipal Facility Management Engineer (Environmental Engineer 2) position. This position is located in our Northwest Region Office (NWRO) in Shoreline, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

Please Note: The salary posted above includes the additional 5% premium pay that this position will receive due to its location in Shoreline, WA in King County.

We want you to join our team of engineers and scientists dedicated to responsible development and thoughtful management of critical wastewater and reclaimed water infrastructure! Working under the direct supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, you will make vital contributions to the regulation, planning, design, and construction of wastewater treatment and water reclamation facilities in northwest Washington.

You will help to protect water quality in the region by developing wastewater discharge permits, reviewing engineering documents for domestic wastewater facilities, providing engineering oversight of infrastructure projects that receive financial assistance, and participating in inspections and enforcement activities.

The work you will do helps ensure that critical wastewater infrastructure projects in the Northwest Region are properly designed to meet state and federal requirements. You will also provide technical guidance to help dischargers understand and meet state water quality rules and laws and improve operation of their facilities.

Telework options for this position: This position will have flexibility of a hybrid schedule, empowering work from home and office, providing less time in traffic and shrinking your carbon footprint. This position will be eligible for up to a 90% telework schedule.

Duties

What you will do:

  • Write and manage wastewater discharge permits and reclaimed water permits.
  • Develop permit conditions and apply mathematical models to complex biological, chemical, and physical properties of the discharge and receiving environment.
  • Provide technical assistance and engineering guidance support for the planning, design, and construction of wastewater and reclaimed water systems.
  • Review and recommend approval or disapproval of general sewer plans, engineering reports, plans and specifications, operations and maintenance manuals, and construction quality assurance plans.
  • Assist in improving unit business processes and collaborate with other Ecology staff to provide outstanding service.
  • Help members of the public understand permits and other regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

A total of six (6) years of experience and/or education as described below:

  • Experience in environmental engineering.
  • Education: involving a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related field.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Must obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and hold an Engineer-In-Training Certificate.
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing NPDES permits.
  • Experience in wastewater treatment plant design and operations.
  • Experience communicating complex technical issues to the public.
