Job Summary

The particle physics group at Caltech seeks applicants for the position of Research Software Engineer (RSE) in high energy physics. The RSE will work on developing new computational techniques for computing observables in quantum field theories, with applications to many areas including collider physics, statistical physics, condensed matter physics, and quantum gravity.

  • Developing and improving numerical bootstrap techniques for computing observables in quantum field theories, with applications to many areas including collider physics, statistical physics, condensed matter physics, and quantum gravity.
  • Maintaining and optimizing shared software tools for numerical bootstrap computations, including programs for large-scale semidefinite programming, for generating tables of conformal blocks, and for performing distributed computations.
  • Documenting new releases and announcing them to the numerical bootstrap community.
  • Supporting numerical bootstrap computations by installing and testing software tools, and assisting researchers with debugging existing code and writing new code.
  • Exploring new algorithms and approaches to convex optimization and their applications to numerical bootstrap computations.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD or other degree in computer science, physics or related field.
  • Familiarity with functional languages: Mathematica and Haskell.
  • Familiarity with semidefinite programming and/or arbitrary precision arithmetic.
  • Track record of open source coding and development as project maintainer or core contributor.

Hiring Range

$68,700 - $111,780 per year. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
