Job Summary
The Assistant Port Engineer will help with the maintenance and repair of the Company's vessels. The Assistant Port Engineer will report directly to the Company's Port Engineer - Southern Fleet. The Assistant Port Engineer - Southern Fleet is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and oversight of safe engineering practices of Company's fleet assigned primarily in the Gulf of Mexico and East Coast Region.
Education and Experience
  • BS Marine Engineering, maritime academy preferred but not required, or equivalent experience in vessel operations and repair.
  • Previous time at sea in capacity as 1st Engineer/Chief Engineer preferred but not required.
  • Previous shoreside port engineer/technical superintendent experience maintaining tugs and barges preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience with ATB vessels preferred but not required.
  • Three (3) years' experience in related supervisory roles.
  • U.S. Coast Guard marine engineer's license on a Merchant Mariner's Document is preferred.

Requirements
  • Previous experience and be comfortable managing vessel drydockings and shipyard periods.
  • Familiarity with motor vessels, diesel engines and their operational support systems.
  • Have and maintain valid State drivers' license and TWIC.
  • Be physically fit to handle heavy machinery and work in small spaces.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S., no visa sponsorship at this time.
  • Available for duty at all hours, as may be required.
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule - may be required to work some weekends, early mornings, or evenings as needed in order to maintain continuous operations.
  • Travel throughout the Gulf of Mexico region to various ports of call to support with vessel operations regarding maintenance and operational requirements.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive information and communications.
  • Requisite Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of oil transportation and marine industry.
  • Knowledge of tugs and barge maintenance systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of tank barge operations, ship operations, and terminal/refinery operations.
  • Ability to work independently within the confines of Company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to repair marine equipment on site under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to perform and be responsible for much of the preventative maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to work with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.
  • Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance.
  • Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crewmembers.
  • Ability to read, speak, write, type, and understand English in person and over the telephone.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Help monitor the preventative maintenance program for the fleet.
  • Perform and be responsible for much of the preventative maintenance and repair work
  • Alert supervisors as to the machinery or vessel systems in need of repair.
  • Develop and monitor budgets and schedules, contractor selection, contractor oversight, and contractor contract management.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory rules and regulations and liaison to U.S. Coast Guard and Class societies.
  • Prepare and manage documentation and monitoring of maintenance and repair work through the company web based structured maintenance and repair program, HELM.
  • Manage the vessels' daily maintenance and repair as well as all expenditure controls/parts ordering utilizing HELM software.
  • Complete dry-dock and project management as well as the development of specifications and bid packages, contract negotiations, and quality assurance.
  • Conduct and direct periodic inspections of vessels for evaluation of operating performance and conformity per internal SMS protocol.
  • Maintain emergency response certification and serve as a member of the incident response team.
  • Has awareness of the Company's Environmental Quality Management System and the requirements to adhere to same.
  • Ensure that system audits are performed consistent with quality and environmental requirements.
  • Ensure that corporate steering committee meetings are conducted consistent with quality and environmental requirements.
  • Be aware of and ensure the use of communication tools for the organization:
  • Corrective action process
  • Safety Alerts / Lessons Learned
  • Advisory committee meetings (Quarterly and Annually)
  • Other additional job duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.
