The opportunity

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes.

As a Director, Opto-Mechanical Engineering within our Optical Engineering group, you will be responsible for leading a team of 6-8 opto-mechanical engineers to contribute to our product development by delivering designs, analysis, building and testing state of the art optical assemblies. The ideal candidate is a strong collaborator; able to reach across organizations to clarify expectations, achieve 'buy-in' where appropriate, and verify system performance through to the final customer. As an ideal candidate, you have a strong technical background and are excited to provide coaching and mentoring.

This position requires onsite presence in our Boulder office at least 3 days per week.

What you’ll do

  1. Lead a team of opto-mechanical engineers with the ability to still be hands-on and versatile.
  2. Implement processes that ensure a high standard of quality for opto-mechanical design development.
  3. Exhibit compassionate leadership, communicate clear performance expectations, and coach your team towards independence.
  4. Independently pursue new skills/knowledge as needed to complete projects.
  5. Drive collaboration between organizations to bridge communication gaps, clarify internal/external customer requirements, identify risks, and sync.
  6. Participate in activities related to design, fabrication, operation, application, testing, and production design reviews.
  7. Collect requirements and coordinate development activities to ensure components and systems conform to engineering and customer specifications.
  8. Contribute to technical design reviews with the Program Manager representing the concerns of their functional specialty on the product development team.
  9. Advocate and enforce best practices in design, development, and testing.

The experience you bring

  1. 10+ years of professional experience in opto-mechanics design is preferred.
  2. 6+ years of experience with complex optical systems, preferably AR systems.
  3. MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Optical Engineering, MS or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field.
  4. Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated record of leading a team of engineers to success.
  5. Exceptional presentation, organization, and logistical skills.
  6. Experience driving teams with an agile mindset is a plus.
  7. Knowledge of CREO or Solidworks.
  8. Must be confident in a highly dynamic and creative environment.
