Primary Responsibilities

As Geographic Information System (GIS) Web Developer you will need to understand the requirements, environments, technology stack, and functionality of the application. The GIS Web Developer will work in a small team (2-5 team members) and is responsible for researching new technologies, software systems, and presenting ideas for system improvements, enhancements, implementation, and conducting impact analysis for software or technology changes. You will coordinate and work closely with other representatives, designers, and subject matter experts (SMEs) to understand functional requirements.

Some high-level duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identify system objectives, functions, and requirements by collaborating with stakeholders.
  • Develop customized web applications, web services, mobile, and enterprise solutions.
  • Develop geoprocessing and GIS web services.
  • Develop GIS web editing/mapping applications.
  • Prepare detailed technical specifications outlining system design and functionality.
  • Test software code changes using frameworks like Junit and Selenium.
  • Write code to enhance application functionality, performance, UI, and features as per requirements and user needs.
  • Plan and design scalable, secure system architectures using patterns such as microservices.
  • Develop application architectures that integrate with existing systems and align with best practices and organizational standards.

Required Skills

  • Strong ability to write code in Java using PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Angular front-end.
  • Fluency in Angular and TypeScript for ESRI Web Application Development.
  • Experience with Postgres SQL and PostGIS for database management.
  • Strong skills in visual communication using maps, diagrams, graphs, and charts.
  • Familiarity with GIS tools such as ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Portal.
  • Ability to create and manage .shp files and organize map layers.
  • Skill in integrating spatial and non-spatial data for geospatial analysis.
  • Experience in interpreting data from various formats to create maps.
  • Working knowledge of SDLC, project management, application delivery with exposure to application integration.
  • Develop, maintain, and update Geographic Information System (GIS) databases.
  • Identify pertinent GIS information and convert data into proper GIS formats.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness; enter data into databases; and update essential GIS layers and databases.
  • Direct relevant experience configuring and maintaining the Information Technology Infrastructure associated with an IT system hosted in the AWS cloud environment.
  • Take initiatives, responsibility, excellent communicator, and multitasker.
  • Experience working within an agile sprint development team environment using Jira and Confluence.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision or in a team setting.

Experience/Qualifications

  • Knowledge of IT concepts, issues, practices, methodologies, and trends particularly relevant to the design of large-scale IT environments.

Education

  • Position requires BS/BA degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university with 5 years of experience OR a MS/MA degree in STEM discipline with 3 years of experience.

Location

  • McLean, VA – Hybrid – Minimum 3 days onsite location required

Travel

  • Occasional Travel within US may be involved.
