About the role :
We are currently seeking a Senior Mine Engineer to join our Engineering team at our Shoal Creek Mine, located in Oakman, Alabama. Shoal Creek Mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the United States. Located on the Black Warrior River, this site produces one of the highest qualities of met coal in the United States. With nine-foot-tall workings, a brand-new longwall, and 15+ years of projected coal reserves, Shoal Creek mine is an ideal place to work.
Located in between Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties in Alabama, this area offers beautiful rivers and lakes, landscapes, and rolling hills at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. Oakman is about an hour from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, both of which provide diverse, family-friendly communities with something for everyone, such as vibrant downtowns, safe, friendly neighborhoods, and excellent schools, including the University of Alabama and other area colleges.

Responsibilities:
The Senior Mine Engineer will plan and coordinate engineering feasibility studies, mine plans, capital requirements, and mine designs. This role is also responsible for providing engineering support for all projects related to reserve development, mine planning, drainage control, surveying, environmental, and mine mapping .
Duties will include:
- Develop, plan, and manage underground and surface engineering projects (capital and operational) in consultation with Tech Services.
- Design and monitor mining geometry to maximize profitability and ensure compliance with applicable mining permits and regulations.
- Provide assistance to the tech services staff and actively participate in training and professional development.
- Conduct geotechnical engineering investigations and projects, with a focus on characterizing rock mass behavior in underground/surface mining operations.
- Perform geotechnical work which involves inspections of underground mining activities to identify rock hazards, provide recommendation and monitor excavation performance.
- Utilize rock mechanics properties to design ground support as needed.
- Supervise consultants and contractors in adherence with federal, state and Peabody policies to ensure safe and timely completion of projects.
- Design and assist in designing and developing mine water handling (pumping) systems.
- Coordinate the development of short-term and long-term mining plans including preparing mining projections in accordance with resource recovery, ventilation, ground control, reclamation plans and property control guidelines.
- Accurately perform or assist in gathering and recording production and engineering data.
- Supervise and perform engineering and surveying activities to accurately monitor, record, and report actual production and performance data at the mine.
- Assist in maintaining mine permitting requirements.
- Monitor and report water, air and reclamation activities as required by regulations and permits.
- Utilize and assist in maintaining the geologic database to optimize mining conditions, product quality, and profitability.
- Utilize and assist in maintaining the land database to ensure proper allocation and payment of royalties.
- Provide technical assistance to operations, maintenance, and preparation plant.
- Obtain ventilation readings and maintain in a ventilation model monthly.
- Preparation of mine timing maps.
- Locate subsidence issues.
- Participate in weekly ops planning meeting.
- Develop mine plan to meet monthly forecast.
- Plan five-year mine strategy.
This position will work Monday-Friday. This position may also require the necessity to work weekends, holidays, or another shift as deemed necessary. About you:
- A minimum of 5-7 years underground coal mining experience is required.
- Underground coal production experience is desired.
- Bachelor's degree in mining engineering required.
- Professional Engineering License or ability and desire to obtain is required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management.
- Ability to travel periodically.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
- Experience developing mine plans and construction project management is preferred.
- Strong up-to-date skills with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, SurvCADD/Carlson, VNET/Ventilation Modeling, are preferred.
- Must have ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces.
- Must have ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
- Must have ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time. Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
- Walking ability will be judged according to SCSR emergency evacuation plan required and approved by MSHA.
- Must have ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
- Must have ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height.
- Must have ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
- Must have ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
- Must have ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Must have ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

In addition, individuals must meet the minimum vison and hearing requirements to fulfil a safety sensitive role:
- At least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) in each eye with or without correction. At least 70° field of vision in horizontal meridian measured in each eye. The use of corrective lenses should be noted on the Medical Examiner's Certificate.
- No more than 40dB average hearing loss in better ear (with or without hearing aid).
