Overview
Utah State University is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to innovate the strategic use of data and build institutional capacity for evidence-based, data-informed planning, and decision-making. This position will directly influence institutional and student success by providing actionable datasets to faculty, staff, administrators, and students by overseeing the analytics integration at USU. The Office of Data and Analytics is uniquely positioned at the USU to make a difference by providing the data and stories to influence decisions that will impact student experience and outcomes.
The Institutional Data Engineer works to design, implement, maintain, and support the USU analytics ecosystem. This includes developing data models, building and maintaining data lakes, warehouses, and lakehouses and analytics environment, and writing scripts for data integration and analysis. This role will work closely and collaboratively with members of the data application development team to define requirements, mine and analyze data, integrate data from various sources, and deploy high-quality data pipelines to support the analytics needs of USU. They will also create and oversee the data models for an automated reporting system.
Under the general supervision of the Chief Data and Analytics Officer, the Data Engineer defines and executes an enterprise analytics model strategy and architecture that supports innovative and efficient analytics for the entire university. The position directs future data modeling initiatives to ensure data governance, quality, and accessibility as well as institutional analytics and official reporting. The position will be expected to ask critical questions and optimize current data reporting, warehousing, and analytics processes. The position gathers requirements to develop, deploy and maintain analytics-optimized data warehouse and data integrations. Additionally, the position is responsible for working with business users and subject matter experts to develop processes to monitor and fix data quality and integrity issues.
This position is eligible for hybrid work within the state of Utah.
Responsibilities
Data Engineering:
  • Direct the gathering of requirements from subject matter experts and stakeholders to architect, develop, deploy and maintain the data model within the enterprise data warehouse / lakehouse environments.
  • Monitor, improve and optimize existing data integration jobs.
  • Coordinate the integration of internal and external data sources to optimize reporting and analytics.
  • Work with data stewards throughout the college to understand data and processes for capturing data.
  • Train analysts and users throughout the college on the definitions and use of data.
  • Develop and maintain official reporting processes.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the college's data dictionary.
  • Work with the business analytics team to optimize analytics, data governance and ensure data quality.
  • Document process, integration jobs and official reporting extracts.
  • Automate recurring processes
Team Mentoring and Support:
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise data engineers and their projects.
  • Train and mentor junior data engineers and analysts.
  • Assist data engineering team in gathering project requirements, design, implementation, peer review, and deployment.
  • Manage projects to ensure accurate data is available in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with at least five (5) years of analytics, data engineering, or information technology experience.
  • Experience with data integration tools.
  • Experience with SQL and Relational Databases.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree.
  • Experience in higher education
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of data warehouse systems, relational databases, and data integration.
  • Ability to maintain and optimize data integration processes.
  • Supervision and management skills including directing, mentoring, and training.
  • Experience with database design, and data extraction, loading and transformation.
  • Experience with structured query language (SQL) and some knowledge of Python and PowerShell scripting.
  • Knowledge of data warehouse architecture, design, and optimization.
  • Knowledge of data integration tools and processes.
  • Ability to mentor, and training junior data engineers and analysts.
  • Ability to learn new software tools and processes quickly and efficiently.
  • Experience with project management for data engineering and dev-ops.
  • Experience in quality assurance and validation of data.
  • Effective communication skills and comfort working with different teams within the organization.
  • Ability to accept and give constructive feedback.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the university.
