Department Summary

Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Infrastructure Services strives to optimize performance increasing storage, elevating the network, and reducing downtime. Network and Engineering Services manages the engineering and operations of the network infrastructure (e.g., wired/WAN, wireless, security/firewall) required to offer network connectivity, such as network cabling, routers, and firewalls. This includes connecting devices (e.g., Internet of Things devices) to the network, network access management, securing access to networks, and appropriate authentication (e.g., network registration systems, VPN, and NAC).


Position Summary

The Manager, Network Engineering (Wired/WAN) will provide leadership and direction for a team of network engineers responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of the university's wide-area network (WAN) and wired network infrastructure. This role encompasses overseeing the team's daily operations, developing strategies for network optimization, reliability, and security, and working closely with the Director of Network Services to align network engineering efforts with the broader objectives of the university. The Manager will also ensure that network solutions support the university's academic, research, administrative, and operational goals and will collaborate with other departments, stakeholders, and vendors to facilitate the successful planning and execution of network projects. This individual will leverage their expertise in WAN and wired network technologies, strong leadership, communication, and project management skills to lead this team.

The Manager, Network Engineering (Wired/WAN) will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications
  1. Five years experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, information technology, network operations, or a related field. (Required)
  2. Two years experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment, or a related field. (Required)
  3. Significant experience in designing, implementing, and supporting large-scale, complex network environments, preferably in a university environment. (Required)
  4. Significant experience with network equipment from major vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, and Palo Alto Networks. (Required)
  5. Extensive experience solving technical and non-technical problems; able to delegate solutioning. Able to lead data gathering efforts seeking information from diverse sources. (Required)
  6. Experience as a point of escalation; understanding of how decisions affect teams; ability to make decisions with integrity. (Required)
  7. Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (Preferred)
  8. Advanced technical skills in WAN and wired network design, configuration, and troubleshooting, including comprehensive knowledge of WAN and LAN technologies, routing protocols (such as OSPF, BGP), MPLS, QoS, and other networking concepts is essential. (Required)
  9. Advanced knowledge of monitoring tools and commands to ensure the quick resolution of issues. (Required)
  10. Skills in using network monitoring tools (such as SolarWinds, Nagios) and diagnostic tools (such as Wireshark) to troubleshoot and optimize network performance. (Required)
  11. Understanding of network security principles and best practices, as well as experience with implementing security policies and compliance with regulations (e.g., GDPR, FERPA). (Required)
  12. Advanced written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate work assignments to medium-sized teams. Demonstrated experience presenting complex technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders. (Required)
  13. Demonstrated leadership / management skills, including abilities in persuasion, negotiation, change management, and mentorship. (Required)
  14. Advanced project management skills with demonstrated experience delegating responsibility, tracking project progress, supervising others, and advising teams on competing priorities. (Required)
  15. Demonstrated experience providing inclusive leadership of others, cultivating an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. (Required)
  16. Inspires creativity in others and advises teams on industry-leading practices, such as the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Has demonstrated experience leading in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  1. Bachelor's Degree in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, or a related. (Required)
  2. Bachelor's Degree in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems. (Preferred)
  3. Cisco Certified Network Professional certification (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certifications (Preferred)
  4. CompTIA Network+ Certification or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) (Preferred)
  5. Project Management Professional (PMP) (Preferred)

Special Conditions for Employment
  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes regular visits to campus as needed (for those who work remotely, travel/lodging expenses are not eligible for reimbursement).

  • The anticipated pay range for this position is $140,689-$156,320, annually; salary is dependent upon the skills and experience of the selected finalist.
