The Payload and Ground Systems Division (PGSD) within the Northrop Grumman Space Systems pushes the boundaries of innovation, redefines engineering capabilities, and drives advances in various sciences. The Deployables Operating Unit within the Mission Enabling Products business unit (MEP BU) of PGSD designs and builds deployable subsystems for space vehicles such as solar arrays, booms, reflectors, and antennas and is seeking a Director 1, Engineering. This Director 1 will lead all engineering functions at the Deployables Operating Unit, including design, analysis, test engineering, tooling engineering, materials & process engineering, and CM/DM, with an organization of approximately 120 employees plus contractors across two sites (Oxnard and Goleta, CA). The Engineering Director will report to the Senior Engineering Director of the MEP BU.

This role may be located in either our Oxnard or Goleta campus.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Functional Leadership : Manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers and professionals, including employee development, training and mentoring. Establish and track goals and objectives for staff, conduct employee performance reviews, and implement employee development.
  • Staffing : Forecast staffing needs and ensure Engineering organization is adequately staffed.
  • Program Execution : Support program IPTs to successfully manage/complete hardware and tooling design and drawings which meet program technical requirements, schedule needs. Lead drawing release scheduling, design and analysis completion, including resource assignments.
  • Continuous Improvement : Develop, implement, and support process improvements, tools and training to reduce Engineering costs, improve quality, and reduce schedule duration. Implement lessons learned, standard practices, best practices, and continuous improvement plans. Lead projects and plans to improve design technology, strategic capability, and capacity.
  • Metrics : Establish and maintain metrics that provide real-time visibility to measure, monitor, and control process performance, including key inputs, outputs, and early warning event triggers. Track key performance indices of On-Time Delivery and First Pass Yield. Apply Earned Value Management System to track cost and schedule performance of design effort.
  • Customer : Support internal and external customer meetings and industry audits.
  • Business Development : Provide inputs for proposal efforts and approve basis of estimates.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, or Aeronautical Engineering or related engineering/scientific discipline and ten (10) years of engineering related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience), or MS Degree with 8 years of exp, or PhD with 6 years of exp.
  • 6 years of experience in a leadership role with direct reports.
  • Familiarity with NX and Teamcenter PLM.
  • Expertise in one of the following core competency areas: design, tooling, or analysis engineering.
  • Understanding of Aerospace industry standards and specifications and application to space flight components and drawings.
  • A broad understanding of engineering, manufacturing, cost and schedule execution, scope management, and risk management is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, computer, documentation, and presentation skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Experience with space deployable systems.
  • Active Security Clearance.

Salary Range: $190,600 - $286,000

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
