SUMMARY: Responsible for managing marine engineering operations for a specific vessel fleet or region, including supervision of employees’ performance and development, equipment maintenance and modification, and administration of assigned budget(s).

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure work is being performed in compliance with company standards as well as local, state, and/or federal guidelines and regulations.
  2. Analyze services provided by vendors, negotiate rates and recommend changes when appropriate.
  3. Evaluate shipyard bid packages and recommend awards.
  4. Assist in maintaining staffing levels of trained mariners.
  5. Assist with development, enhancement, and implementation of policies, procedures, and vessel standards.
  6. Assist the Fleet Director to develop annual budgets and forecasts work and funding requirements for the fiscal year including planned, emergent, and drydocking costs.
  7. Participate/analyze monthly financial review process and provide updates to the Fleet Director.
  8. Monitor history and pricing for major repair periods and work with vessel Superintendents to develop specifications.
  9. Follow the company drydocking process and ensure preparations are on track.
  10. Assist the Fleet Director in developing operations and engineering procedures to attain cost savings and improve vessel material condition.
  11. Follow up with Superintendents for weekly and monthly engineering updates.
  12. Monitor compliance with Regulatory, USCG requirements and liaise with agencies.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in nautical science, marine transportation, marine engineering, or a related field; or a combination of post high school and equal experience may be substituted.

EXPERIENCE: 5-10 years of related marine engineering experience in a supervisory capacity or as Fleet technical manager, Engineering manager or Technical superintendent/Port Engineer. Experience with tankers/petroleum vessels is preferred.

TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY: Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Outlook, and Word. Proficiency in maintenance, repair, and ship management software is preferred.

COMPETENCIES:

Strong understanding of domestic and international shipping regulatory requirements. Ability to communicate effectively, establish and maintain effective working relationships, prioritize tasks, and manage projects.

OTHER: Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Licensed as a marine engineer by the U.S. Coast Guard (preferred).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works both inside an office environment and outside in varying conditions. Must be able to crouch, stoop, and climb ladders. May require extended use of computer keyboard and monitor.
