Job Title: Chief Scientist for Missile Defense Systems Engineering and Analysis

Location: Redstone Arsenal

Job Description: Torch Technologies is seeking a highly skilled and experienced engineer/analyst/scientist to join an established and respected team supporting Missile Defense System (MDS) assessment. This position consists of serving as the Chief Scientist for two Torch-led organizations: Collaborative Test and Evaluation Center (CTEC) and Sensors Collaborative Test and Evaluation Center (SCTEC). The selected candidate will perform a wide range of technical leadership duties involving algorithm testing, data generation, modeling and simulation, and analysis in support of Missile Defense Agency (MDA) initiatives.

  • The mission of the CTEC is to provide MDA’s Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) Directorate with independent, government-owned, modeling, simulation, and evidence-based assessments for future C2BMC software builds.
  • The mission of the SCTEC is to provide MDA’s Ground Sensors Directorate with independent, government-owned, modeling, simulation, analysis, and assessment capability for future sensor software builds.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include leading, conducting, and coordinating a team of 40+ engineers/analysts/scientists in:

  • Evaluating active/passive sensor performance, data fusion, multi-sensor tracking and target discrimination algorithms, system-level command and control algorithms, and missile defense battle management techniques.
  • Developing and evaluating advanced prototypes, establishing and leading assessment plans for evaluation of third-party algorithms, and planning and conducting advanced MDS survivability assessments.
  • Coordinating with Government/Contractor Program Managers and external stakeholders to identify and solve missile defense challenges and opportunities.
  • Leading, mentoring, and guiding CTEC and SCTEC exploratory research focus areas.
  • Reviewing and approving CTEC and SCTEC technical analyses and assessments provided to external customers.
  • Chairing CTEC/SCTEC Technical Review Boards and managing internal technical review processes.
  • Advising CTEC and SCTEC leadership on all technical aspects of lab activities.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • M.S. and/or PhD in Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics
  • 12+ years of related experience
  • Demonstrated ability and interest in solving complex technical problems
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor highly technical teams
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic and collaborative environment
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, C++, or other programming languages

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • PhD in Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics
  • Extensive experience with missile defense system elements, C2BMC, and missile defense operations
  • Missile defense system and element-level computer modeling and simulation
  • Experience leading radar and/or missile defense systems engineering and assessments
  • Data analysis planning and execution
  • Missile defense system and element-level algorithm evaluation
  • Target discrimination, tracking, and trajectory estimation
  • Analysis of optical and/or RF target signatures
  • Analysis of command and control systems
  • Artificial intelligence / machine learning
