Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Network Engineer is responsible for planning and designing the network infrastructure and enterprise network solutions to include, troubleshooting, installing, implementing, and administering network systems and providing Tier III support. Analyzes capacity issues and develops capacity planning models. Assesses network performance to ensure that it meets present and future needs of the business and provides network planning recommendations to management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Conducts short- and long-term planning to meet network requirements.
  • Designs and implements network systems.
  • Configures Cisco routers, switches and firewalls.
  • Provides support for network connectivity or related network issues for the user community.
  • Plans and monitors the installation of network systems.
  • Analyzes network activity and network problems to discover and prevent systematic errors.
  • Recommends network design changes/enhancements for improved systems availability and performance.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and resolves network problems.
  • Researches, analyzes and recommends the implementation of software or hardware changes to rectify any network deficiencies or to enhance network performance.
  • Analyzes facilities bandwidth requirements and system interdependencies. Develops capacity planning models.
  • Recommends, develops, and updates network security guidelines.
  • Ensures planned disaster recovery testing activities are performed and technical criteria are met.
  • Evaluates services provided by vendors and recommends changes.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with SAWS staff and the general public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
DECISION MAKING
  • This position receives general supervision.
  • Reports to the Manager - Network Engineering.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university or technical institute degree/certificate.
  • Four to six years' of relevant IT work experience.
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).
  • Must have a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) in Enterprise, Collaboration, Data Center, Security, or Service Provider
  • Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Administrator (PCNSA).
  • Aruba Certified Mobility Professional (ACMP).
  • Splunk Core Certified User, Power User, or Advance Power User
JOB DIMENSIONS
  • Knowledge of Enterprise system monitoring and management tools such as Solarwinds, Cisco ISE, Aruba ClearPass, Splunk, NetBrain, ExtraHop, Wireshark, and Cisco Ironport.
  • Knowledge of commercial enterprise-level tools and products to provide network services, including firewalls, IPS/IDS, DNS, DHCP, web security, TACACS+, VPN and NAC.
  • Knowledge of Cisco SRND/SAFE and industry best practices.
  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix and other open source software to include BIND and Nessus.
  • Familiarity with network, server, storage virtualization, i.e. MDS switching infrastructure, VSAN, VRF, VPN, and VMWare vSphere.
  • Knowledge of Cisco VoIP, including Call Manager 12.X, Unity, Contact Center.
  • Knowledge of Aruba Wireless networking to include 802.11a, b, g, n, ac and ax, LWAPP, CAPWAP, WCS, WLC and APs.
  • Knowledge of Cisco enterprise grade products to include: Nexus 5000 and 9000 series, Catalyst 3850, 4500-X and 9000 series, ISR G3, ACE/GSS, ASA/FTD, IPS/IDS, TACACS+, CUCM, WebEX, AnyConnect/Cisco Secure Client, NAC.
  • Advanced knowledge of IOS, NX-OS, EIGRP, BGP, GRE and OSPF.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing and ability to communicate with internal and external customers and contractor representatives involved with LAN/WAN design, network implementation, and network management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 70 pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting, and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment.
May be required to work hours other than the regular schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
