Overview

As the Director of Mechanical Engineering, you will be responsible for the leadership of the Mechanical Engineering discipline. You will engage in the generation of growth objectives of the mechanical engineering practice in collaboration with the National Director of Engineering. You will use extensive technical knowledge to direct and implement mechanical design, develop, and mentor teammates, lead strategic planning, build strong internal relationships with other market leadership, and participate in marketing, project planning, proposal development, and client interviews.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for communicating brand standards to multiple studio engineering leads to operate as a one brand practice. Work to create a one firm approach to the mechanical discipline in both pursuit and delivery areas of the engineering practice.
  • Leads the training and educational opportunities for the brand wide mechanical engineering team. Identifies discipline staff members with relevant technical expertise for participation in training development.
  • Leads discipline specific standardization practices across the firm to assess and recommend improvements relative to mechanical engineering software, design procedures, standard details, and master specifications.
  • Responsible for the establishment and maintenance of firm wide mechanical engineering quality control processes and procedures.
  • Work with the National Director of Engineering to identify Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) within the discipline. Point of contact for identifying SMEs for specific project opportunities. Assists in identifying personnel for specific project pursuits.
  • Work with the National Director of Engineering to identify relevant trends specific to mechanical engineering discipline for improvements to tools, training, software, and technology for practice advancement and best in class operations.
  • Identify gaps specific to market and technical expertise for development of growth plans with National Director of Engineering.
  • Coordinate discipline work sharing opportunities across studios for appropriate staffing mix in collaboration with studio Operations Directors.
  • Communicate with National Director of Engineering on engineering business development opportunities across studios.
  • Serves as mechanical engineer lead within project teams to plan the design process and solve problems of large scope and complexity.
  • Lead Project Managers with fee development for mechanical engineering portions of work.
  • Establishes, designs, and specifies project-appropriate mechanical engineering requirements.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs the work of Engineers, EITs, and Specialists.
  • Attends client meetings and communicates with clients, consultants, contractors, and others during various stages of project development.
  • Conducts site investigations and observations.
  • Prepares narratives, reports, calculations, drawing and specification documents in accordance with a high degree of quality, yet regarding project schedule and budget constraints.
  • Facilitates cross-discipline discussions and coordination.
  • Reviews mechanical design documents for quality and compliance with code and program requirements.
  • Participates in Construction Administration by reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to RFI’s, solving construction issues, and performing site visits to assess general conformance with the design concept.
  • Mentors and encourages the development of professionals, junior professionals and technicians.
  • Performs marketing and business development activities including building relationships with key clients and strategic partners, proposal writing, fee estimates, and client interviews.
  • Travel for marketing and project-related activities will be required.

Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills and ability to develop collaborative relationships across all studios.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a Mechanical focus.
  • Minimum 15+ years’ experience in mechanical engineering on a wide variety of projects. Minimum 5+ years of team management experience.
  • Registered Professional Engineer required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of site planning, design, and a practical knowledge of codes.
  • Self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal, communication, writing, and presentation skills.
