The Lead Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for overseeing the day to day activities of the Operations Team within Networks and Systems. The Operations Team supports, maintains, and makes configuration adjustments to the University's complex infrastructure. This infrastructure includes but is not limited to:

  • WAN, Spine, Leaf, Distribution, Voice (PSTN), and Edge routers and switches
  • Wireless Controllers and access points
  • Security systems including access control and cameras
  • All components of the telephony infrastructure, including call managers, voicemail, contact center, and phone messaging queues
  • Enterprise backup and storage systems
  • Datacenter and closet environmentals (HVAC) as well as uninterrupted power supplies (UPS) and power distribution units (PDU)
  • The entire underground plant, conduits, paths, and fiber which connect the campus buildings

This position also plays a key role in any tel/data projects on campus, providing not only expertise in this field, but also serving as a project manager which oversees all trades within a given project.

  • Field work deploying network gear and peripherals as required

Job Description

  • Oversees the design, development, management and coordination of projects related to maintenance and expansion of the complex campus wired and wireless, telephony, networks and server rooms. Estimated Time: 50%
  • Leads a team of engineers, ensuring all server, network, telephony, and storage related operational work is completed accurately and timely. Estimated Time: 20%
  • Works closely with the engineering team to design and implement core network and server related infrastructure on campus. Provides guidance and leadership to all stages of the engineering process to help ensure the operational responsibilities following the implementation are sustainable, repeatable, and well documented. Estimated Time: 10%
  • Work in coordination with Security team to develop, implement, and maintain network security at all layers. Estimated Time: 5%
  • Network monitoring with Slack, Logic Monitor, Intermapper, and Airwave. Estimated Time: 5%
  • Represents ITS tel/data interests and provides technical specifications with regard to Capital Projects and other non-ITS projects that may occur. Coordinates with third party vendors and contractors to integrate their devices or applications into the campus network. Estimated Time: 5%
  • Acts as on-site technical point of contact for network infrastructure components requiring outside vendor participation, including but not limited to campus voice, data, security, energy management, food service, laundry view and card access, retail point-of-sales. Estimated Time: 5%

Requirements:

  • B.A./B.S. required.
  • 5-8 years with 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
  • This position oversees a network consisting of over 3600 wireless access points, 300+ network switches, and over 100 miles of data cabling. This position assists with managing four other employees and multiple contractors.
  • Must be able to manage complex large and small scale projects including documenting and leading the project team.
  • Must be able to analyze and correct problems with the wired and wireless, telephony networks as well as engineer changes to the network.
  • Must have advanced knowledge of internet routing (OSPF, BGP and switching protocols, Arista and Aruba network equipment and software, multicast, VxLAN, TCP/IP, wireless, network analysis, packet tracing/sniffing and other networking skills).
  • Must be able to work with systems administrators and applications developers to design and troubleshoot new systems and resolve problems. Must be able to take projects from inception through completion; coordinating schedules and assignments with all involved parties.
  • Requires the ability to drive; requires the ability to lift 75 pounds; exposure to outdoor weather during all seasons.
