The Research Engineer will diagnose and hypothesize aging mechanisms in polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis cells based on available experimental data. She or he will design and perform electrochemical experiments for diagnosing aging and optimizing lifetime. To support the interpretation, he or she may perform a variety of operando and postmortem analyses (scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, XRF, Raman microscopy, etc.), to inform on aging mechanisms. He or she will also identify, and design new experiments required to elucidate and validate aging models.
Primary responsibilities:
- Research in the degradation mechanisms present in electrolysis cells and appropriate mitigation strategies
- Degradation and performance testing of cells and materials for polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis
- Electrochemical and physical characterization of electrolysis cells and materials
- Development of diagnostic tests indicative of aging modes
- Collaboration with other experimentalists and modelers in the team as well as academic and national laboratory partners
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline
- Prior experience with physical and chemical characterization methods
Preferred Qualifications
- The candidate should have a proven research track record and a strong foundation in electrochemistry, preferably electrolysis.
- Autonomy, attention to detail, flexibility, creativity, excellent communication, and teamwork skills
