Substation/Transmission Designer
Location: Austin, Texas (Relocation support available)
We are seeking a Substation/Transmission Designer to join our client's team. The ideal candidate will handle drafting and design tasks for both substation and transmission facilities, using fundamental design techniques and skills. Responsibilities will vary based on the specific needs of the department and projects as determined by the Engineering Team. This position reports to the Director of Engineering.

We are seeking a Substation/Transmission Designer to join our client's team. The ideal candidate will handle drafting and design tasks for both substation and transmission facilities, using fundamental design techniques and skills. Responsibilities will vary based on the specific needs of the department and projects as determined by the Engineering Team. This position reports to the Director of Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop conceptual design drawings for new or modified substation and transmission facilities, covering electrical, structural, protection and control, and civil disciplines.
- Create drawings and diagrams based on notes, sketches, and verbal instructions provided by subject matter experts.
- Assist in preparing Request for Proposal (RFP) packages for substation and transmission projects.
- Review drawing packages created by external consultants to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
- Enforce and adhere to company drafting standards.
- Manage and maintain the department's document and drawing management system, including version control for all related documentation.
- Track and manage long-lead material counts and project allocations.
- Ensure that the GIS platform is updated and accurately reflects all recently completed projects.
- Assist in reporting geospatial data for completed projects to the Public Utility Commission (PUC).
- Perform document management tasks for projects, including maintaining records for drawings, testing documents, and other technical documentation.
- Oversee the transmittal process for documentation between contractors and internal teams, ensuring proper filing and approval.
- Collaborate with the engineering team to promptly review and return drawing packages to external contractors and consultants.
- Make revisions to existing specifications as directed by the Engineering Team.
- Review and approve encroachment requests from other utilities.
- Maintain and update PLS-CADD models and system KMZ files.
- At least 5 years of experience using AutoCAD software.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in substation and transmission design.
- General knowledge of typical design practices and methodologies for substations and transmission lines.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, PlexEarth, Microsoft Office Suite, Blue Beam, and Google Earth.
- Previous experience working with an electric utility is preferred.
- Demonstrated accuracy, reliability, and thoroughness in previous roles.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments.
- Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work across different functions.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
