Job Summary
As a fast-growing startup, Motionworks is looking for a new or recent graduate at the intersection of data engineering and data science with an interest in urban planning, location intelligence, or transport analytics. We are looking for passionate data engineers who thrive on using data modeling and software development to create impactful solutions that make the world a better place. Your responsibilities will include:
- Implementing data pipelines built in Apache Airflow on the Google Cloud Platform (Google Composer)
- Building mathematical and machine learning models that enhance our primary products
- Refining data processes to reduce pipeline processing costs and increase efficiency of existing workflows
- Identifying and implementing data structures, storage, and indexing to improve existing pipelines and/or reduce pipeline processing costs
- Working with product leads to operationalize research and development concepts into repeatable and efficient data pipelines
- Implementing quality control checks in the data pipeline
- Designing, prototyping, and developing innovative data solutions for geospatial problems
- Analyzing transportation and visitation data patterns to ensure our products accurately reflect current conditions
- Improving, validating, documenting, and performing analytics work on our current data solutions
An ideal candidate for this position will be a data engineer who thinks about the physical world in which people move. These attributes are combined to critically analyze a problem at hand, do research on practical and effective solutions, perform modeling work, implement solutions, and analytically assess the results. You will need to communicate complex concepts and solutions to technical and nontechnical audiences through effective visualizations, statistical analysis, and documentation.
An ideal candidate is organized yet scrappy, thoughtful, and most importantly, has a strong desire to learn.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, analytical City Planning, or Geography (or equivalent degree). A graduate degree is highly desired.
- Hands-on experience in quantitative analytics, data science, or data engineering is highly valued.
- Demonstrated development in Python
- Understanding of cloud computing (preferably AWS or GCP)
- Demonstrated SQL experience with tools like BigQuery, RedShift, or Snowflake
- Experience with version control (preferably Git/GitHub)
- Experience with Linux/Unix command line and virtualized environments
- Ability to build and evaluate statistical and/or machine learning models
- Ability to create effective visualizations with tools like Matplotlib
- Solid critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Experience building data pipelines and automating processes with Apache Airflow
- Experience with Docker containers
- Transportation modeling consulting or public sector service
Salary Range : $90K – $120K
Location
San Diego, California
(This position will be in the office most days with ample flexibility for modified hours to support family or other personal commitments. Our office is one block from Santa Fe Depot.)
