Tazewell County (population 131,400) is located in Central Illinois along the Illinois River with a quality environment and a rich history. The Highway Department has 19 full-time employees who are responsible for the maintenance of 204 miles of county highway and 794 miles of township roads with associated drainage structures as well as 185 bridges.
The Civil Engineer position, being under the direction of the County Engineer and Assistant County Engineer, performs moderately difficult professional civil engineering duties in connection with the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of public improvement projects. The Civil Engineer ensures sound engineering practices and compliance with County, State, and Federal codes, standards, and ordinances.
SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with Experience, $35.07 to $49.77 per hour
HOURS OF WORK: 40 Hours/Week but depends on work activity
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs design and construction management of projects including - roadways, bridge and culvert replacement, various transportation-related projects and issues.
- Utilizes various computer CAD & GIS software to prepare engineering plans and design documents.
- Assists in design and hydraulic analysis of county bridges, box culverts, and culvert pipes considering environmental aspects.
- Inspects storm sewer, culvert, street, curb, multi-use path, drainage, grading, and other roadway-related components as well as maintaining inspection reports.
- Conducts manual and mechanical traffic counts in addition to compiling traffic accident data.
- Performs topographic and construction surveys to ensure GIS and as-built records are accurate.
- Under Program Manager Supervision, completes bridge inspections per FHWA National Highway Institute requirements.
- Assists in the coordination of other governmental agencies' projects.
- Provides exceptional communication and customer service to the general public, other county departments, developers, consulting engineers, contractors, and county officials.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field and possession of a valid State of Illinois Class D or higher driver's license with a safe driving record required
- Successful passing of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification, and one (1) year of professional civil engineering experience preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) or the ability to obtain a license with the State of Illinois within four (4) years desired
