Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver - The World's Most Experienced Driver - to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.
Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.
In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Engineering Manager.
You will:
- Work with cross-functional teams including software engineers, product managers, and operations leads to develop and implement requirements, system architecture, and verification strategy for new depot automation features, such as navigation within depots, charging, power cycling, and software updates.
- Develop deep technical understanding of existing and new depot automation features and drive a robust end-to-end verification and monitoring system to ensure these features meet high efficacy goals.
- Develop qualification methods to launch new features and depots and provide engineering recommendations to senior stakeholders.
- Debug field issues to determine root cause and identify solutions with cross-functional teams. Be the point person for retrospectives and implement improvements to test coverage and processes to prevent similar issues from happening in the future.
You have:
- A bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or other technical field.
- At least 8 years of experience in systems engineering, software development, or related field.
- A systems engineering mindset and a proactive, data-driven approach to fixing problems.
- Aptitude to apply existing technical depth to new areas and learn quickly.
- Ability to write code for use in debugging, querying data sets (SQL), and creating dashboards.
- Comfortable juggling multiple projects at once and working in ambiguity.
We prefer:
- Strong foundation in system engineering fundamentals such as requirements definition, formal verification, and validation methods.
- Experience with positioning or inertial navigation.
- Experience with simulation-based testing.
- Experience with test development including simulation and hardware in the loop.
- Experience deploying products at scale.
- Ability to do data analysis in Python.
