Overview:

The general purpose of the Chief Engineer is managing the maintenance of all the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems throughout the hotel and managing the Engineering and Security Departments. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining preventative maintenance programs for all equipment, systems, guestrooms, and public areas; leading effective safety programs; and coordinating and implementing capital MEP improvement projects. This role involves managing outside contracts and the functions of the engineering department in managing the workflow (repairs, maintenance, mechanical, FF&E, Life Safety Systems), as well as preventive and corrective maintenance systems. The Chief Engineer is responsible for the development, implementation, and training schedule of extensive Engineering Manuals, which include Policies and Procedures, equipment locations and operations, Guest Request and House Request Program, Life Safety, and the location of shut-off valves, isolation valves, and utilities mains. These manuals will also contain numerous maps, diagrams, and blueprints to be used as reference material. The role requires providing leadership, mentoring, training, career development, and annual evaluations for all Associates within the Division. It includes the distribution and follow-up of work orders to related individuals and departments. A strong sense of responsibility and accountability is necessary for this position, along with excellent inter-personal skills and good judgment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform, assign, and/or verify completion of routine and emergency maintenance and the operation of the physical structure of the hotel and all mechanical systems.
  • Ensure the highest quality work standards are being performed by staff in all tasks and assignments according to performance and safety standards.
  • Ensure the execution of exemplary customer service standards by self and staff at all times.
  • Assist with selection, training, supervision, development, discipline, and counseling of staff in accordance with departmental and company policies and procedures.
  • Utilize the on-line work order system and distribute workflow efficiently.
  • Maintain inventory of PPE, engineering parts, supplies, tools, and materials for the department.
  • Support and assure compliance with all company and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Support and assure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist with the implementation of the management company’s environmental policies and practices.
  • Assist with the implementation of safety programs.
  • Attend staff meetings if/when requested.
  • Lead/Attend Safety Committee meetings if/when requested.
  • Perform necessary repairs or maintenance as required or assigned.
  • Execute Performance Evaluations for associates.
  • Perform Risk Management duties as assigned or required.
  • Conduct self as a resource for all departments of the property.
  • Maintain a professional image at all times.
  • Maintain cleanliness and integrity of mechanical areas, shops, tool carts, and tools.
  • Perform special projects as assigned by the General Manager.
  • Be available 24/7 for emergency contact.
  • Be available to work any shift as deemed necessary.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years' experience in facilities management of hospitality-related properties.
  • Proven track record in managing an efficient workforce focusing on preventative maintenance of the asset's public areas, guestrooms, and physical plant.
  • Experience in organizing, implementing, and maintaining a preventative maintenance tracking system and work order system.
  • Experience in coordinating and managing hospitality capital improvement projects.
  • Proven command of the English language, both oral and written.
  • Proven ability to take charge and work with minimum supervision.
  • Strong PC skills with an emphasis on Excel.

  • Ability to hear emergency alarms and follow appropriate emergency procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical system problems.
  • Extensive working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, roofs, building finishes, mechanical operations, energy management, and Preventative Maintenance Programs.

Safety Requirements:

  • OSHA laws require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when performing work duties that have a potential risk to your health or safety.
  • Devices required may include back support belts, protective gloves, eye protection, breathing protection, hearing protection, lock-out/tag-out protection, and any other equipment necessary to provide a safe working environment.

All work duties conducted by Engineering personnel will be evaluated, and regular scheduled training and refresher training will be conducted as required by law. Associates will be trained in the use and care of any and all required PPE equipment. The Hotel/Resort provides this required PPE, and it is the responsibility of the engineer to wear this equipment as it relates to daily work assignments. It is your responsibility to report defective, damaged, or lost PPE to your Manager and follow all Safety Policies and Procedures.
