Summary:
The Manager of Mechanical Engineering will build and lead a team of mechanical engineers, including managing, training, and mentoring the team members. This position will work closely with executives, project managers, engineering leaders, as well as production personnel to select and assign resources to fill required mechanical engineer roles/tasks within the company. This position will also serve as the senior mechanical engineer within the company and will provide technical advice and analysis on the most important projects.
Responsibilities:
- Build and lead a team of Mechanical Engineers.
- Manage and assign mechanical engineering resources to project roles and requirements as outlined by the Engineering/R&D directors.
- Provides leadership, guidance, and support to all mechanical engineering staff.
- Hires new mechanical engineers as needed
- Monitors performance of the mechanical engineering team members and reports on metrics
- Counsel, mentor and assist with mechanical engineers that are performing below the expected standards
- Function as mechanical engineering lead on the most important product development programs.
- Develops and executes functional strategy within their team.
- Reports on metrics that measure the impact of mechanical engineering team on the larger organization and uses the metrics to guide decision making
- Participates in business development activities by reviewing proposal content and attending calls.
- Works with peers to identify and execute on improvements to capabilities within the mechanical engineering functional area.
- Stay abreast of changes in technology that will improve the company’s technical capabilities.
- Create leaner, more efficient and more profitable business practices.
Skills, experience and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and 6 years of engineering work experience, including 2 years of experience in a leadership capacity, or a combination of education, training, and relevant work experience.
- Engineering experience in low volume/high mix engineering and manufacturing environments.
- Extensive experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and CAD/CAM applications.
- Knowledgeable about Materials: Strengths, Mechanicals, Chemistry (Steels, Alloys, forgings, castings) and plastics
- Experienced with Non-destructive examination (NDE) testing and application.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Experience building and test hardware prototypes, iterating designs to optimize performance and manufacturability.
- Experience developing and implementing testing procedures to verify the functionality, reliability, and safety of hardware components.
