Job Requirements / Description

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.

We have an exciting career opportunity for a Project Engineer (PE) in our cross-product / cross platform Diminished Manufacturing Sources (DMS) Engineering Group located in Poway, CA. Air and ground-based products, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Ground Control Stations (GCS), and Radar subsystems require continued engineering solutions throughout their lifecycle. DMS Engineering has become a critical, specialized team within the company, used to identify engineering mitigation solutions and rapidly re-engineer aspects of the platform to help ensure there are no production nor sustainment impacts to our wide fleet of Unmanned Aerial Systems and their customers. This engineering team interfaces with all product lines and customers across the enterprise during all parts of the lifecycle, from pre-concept to development, to test, to production and sustainment.

With limited supervision, this cross-platform engineer will be responsible for identifying replacement components, developing short- and long-term mitigation solutions for various impacts, and working with engineering and programs to implement technical resolutions in a fast-paced environment. The engineer is required to interface across multiple engineering disciplines (including electrical, mechanical, software, components, materials, cyber, safety, structures, test, airworthiness and more), and multiple non-engineering disciplines (including program management, finance, scheduling, configuration management, data management, publications, and more) in order to develop, manage, and execute critical engineering solutions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Identify replacement component options relative to larger system.
  2. Analyze engineering details and program risks relative to unprocurable components within the system.
  3. Develop engineering reports documenting the short and long-term resolution strategies.
  4. Brief Program Managers (PMs) and engineers on short-term and long-term resolution strategies.
  5. Coordinate and manage engineering projects with functional engineering groups to ensure the continued supportability and viability of GA-ASI’s products and platforms.
  6. Work closely with PMs to identify and communicate programmatic impacts.
  7. Develop engineering cost estimates for Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) activities.
  8. Create engineering project schedules and resolution timelines.
  9. Lead engineering to implement resolution activities.
  10. Support engineering / manufacturing with the design, development, prototyping and production solutions.
  11. Work with test engineering to successfully complete airworthiness assessments as well as ground and flight testing when required.
  12. Interface with technical publications staff to ensure documentation updates are implemented as needed.
  13. Present report(s) at engineering meetings; participate in program reviews and program consultations.
  14. Anticipate future engineering needs and the modifications required to accomplish technical goals.
  15. Maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  16. Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  17. Utilize Python and Excel-based tools to improve engineering processes and efficiencies, if possible.
  18. Ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance is required.

Job Qualifications:
  1. Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows: six or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, four or more years of experience with a master's degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
  2. Must have a thorough understanding of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.
  3. Requires ability to perform assigned tasks in short-order and with a continued sense of urgency.
  4. Requires ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  5. Must be motivated to learn about interface characteristics, function/operation, and end-usage of GA-ASI products and platforms.
  6. Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
  7. Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
  8. Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required.
  9. Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.
  10. Component or Project Engineering experience desired, but not required.
  11. Software (e.g., Python) experience desired, but not required.
  12. Able to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance required.
