Job Description and Duties

Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary but shall only be eligible for one amount.
The candidate works under the general direction of the Chief of the Air Quality Section-Investigations Unit (Research Scientist Supervisor I). The Research Scientist III (RS III) conducts complex, multidisciplinary original research studies on air contaminants and environmental health problems. The RS III provides technical support and guidance on Air Quality, as mandated by Health and Safety Code §425, §105400 et seq. Current projects include evaluation of school indoor air quality education and clean air mitigation measures, as well as airborne pathogen control during outbreaks.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Having a background in air quality (or building) science and measurements in addition to public policy.
  • Some experience of writing project proposals and acquiring funding.
