Responsibilities

What you'll be challenged to do:

TranSystems is seeking an Entry-Level Highway Civil Engineer to join one of the following TranSystems' Illinois offices: Chicago, Schaumburg, and/or Geneva . Become a part of our expanding team of experts in highway, structural, roadway, rail, and intermodal design, as well as construction inspection. The new team member will join our highway division, contributing to a variety of tasks such as plan development, quantity calculations, geometric design, pavement marking and signing, drainage design, traffic studies, traffic signal design, community engagement, report composition, specifications, cost estimations, roadway lighting, and other related duties. The candidate may also collaborate closely with other groups on multi-disciplinary projects, offering the chance to tackle challenging assignments in a dynamic and innovative work setting.

  • Analyzes information and data to perform routine design tasks.
  • Receives instructions from Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers as to the general results expected.
  • Research design options and document findings.
  • Responsible as a member of the design team for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
  • Researches code requirements.
  • Prepares environmental impact and other administrative reports required for project permits.
  • Keeps Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Assist or participate in preparation of business proposals.
  • May be asked to participate in non-design engineering activities such as construction inspection and materials testing, surveying, CADD production, and field data collection.
  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited program.
  • Ability to obtain Fundamentals of Engineering registration within 1 year.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience (including internships).

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:

  • Graduate from ABET accredited program.
  • EIT.
  • Previous internship experience in roadway, bridge, drainage, construction inspection and/or lighting.
  • Experience with Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, Illinois DOT, Chicago DOT, local municipalities, Metra, Class I railroads, or on other Federally-funded projects.
  • Geopak and/or Microstation working knowledge.
  • No relocation or stipend assistance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, construction and field assignments can be severe (i.e., airport noise, inside factories, construction equipment, jack hammers, etc.)
  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk, or hear, and drive a car. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
