Since photons don't feel heat, we can take advantage of existing cryogenic cooling systems, the kind that have been operating at facilities like the Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC). And because photons are in fact light, they can move between subsystems at tremendous speed using standard fiber connectivity.

Job Summary:

As part of the System Build and Validation Team, the Optical System Development Engineer is responsible for the construction of high performance fiber optic subsystem components including EDFA's, high speed optical timing and polarization control modules.

Responsibilities:

1. Ownership of the construction of optical fiber subsystems and modules, including electrical/electronic control and mechanical assemblies.
2. Drive assembly protocol and version controlled documentation including the composition and authoring of clear, detailed methodologies for both assembly and test.
3. Management of bill of materials (BOM), documentation and continuous product improvement (CPI) Collection, tracing and analysis of build data including design and component troubleshooting.
4. Work closely with supply chain and vendors, design engineering and technicians to improve current and future generations of product.
5. Work with cross-functional teams to execute debug tests for software and hardware control systems.

Experience/Qualifications:

1. B.S. in Physics, Optical or Electrical Engineering preferred, with 4+ years industry experience.
2. Experience working with fiber lasers and amplifiers, fiber optic components, splice equipment and optimization, fiber routing and equipment maintenance.
3. Experience validating and testing fiber optic components and systems transferring design and development into robust and scalable products.
4. Experience working with optical test equipment including polarization analysis, insertion/return loss, optical backscatter reflectometers (OBR), optical spectrum analyzer (OSA).
5. Python scripting, calling Controls SW APIs / drivers to control lab equipment and proprietary systems.

The range below reflects the minimum and maximum target range for new hire base salary across all US locations. Actual compensation may vary outside of this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to a candidate's qualifications including relevant education and training, competencies, experience, geographic location, and business needs. Base pay is only one part of the total compensation package. Full time roles are eligible for equity and benefits. Base pay is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
