Position Details:
We are seeking a Business Systems Engineer accountable for the SAP ECC functions of Purchasing and Material Master records within our Supply Chain Management Team. The team is accountable for managing the central master material records for logistics, ensuring accuracy, for the source of truth through our SAP systems. Partner with Grainger’s procurement team to support effective and efficient procurement processes and systems, which in turn provides quality products and services to serve our customers.
This role is a functional/technical role, and the candidate should have experience with ECC custom programing, configuration, and business processes. You will have experience designing, troubleshooting, writing, integration testing, and supporting ABAP development as required. This position functions as a liaison working with stakeholders to elicit, analyze, communicate, and validate requirements for changes to business processes, policies, and information systems.
As a Business Systems Engineer, you will:
- Implement, configure, develop, maintain and optimize enterprise-grade commercial software platforms that enable Grainger’s core business processes (Order Mgmt, Supply Chain and Warehouse, Finance and HR).
- Possess a deep understanding of the core business processes enabled by these tools and are able to translate business requirements to the most optimal, performant, reliable, scalable and secure solution that meets the need.
- Are responsible for seamless operation of/integration between complex systems in a rapidly-evolving ecosystem that includes traditional ERPs (on-prem, hybrid, cloud), best-in-breed specialized tools and SaaS platforms, as well as fully-custom solutions.
- Demonstrate Grainger’s core Engineering principles and continuous improvement mindset including a stewardship for both the overall Business Systems Platform and improving our data-first culture.
- Share responsibility for the growth of the Engineering discipline at Grainger through community involvement, internal centers of practice, mentoring and coaching other Engineers.
You Will:
- Design, configure and/or develop, deploy, optimize, monitor and improve systems and business applications. Clearly demonstrates understanding of the implications of their usage on the business.
- Contribute to capability roadmaps and conducting technology research for innovation and continuous improvement. Translate complex business requirements into detailed technical specifications and deliverables
- Specialized with core technical and functional domain experience within respective team (beyond where necessary, demonstrates curiosity). Defines nonfunctional requirements in accordance with Engineering best practices (Security, reliability, performance, etc.)
- Partners with administration and operational teams to improve key service practices. Documenting debt and waste. Develops sustainable feedback loops for continuous improvement. Builds sustainable systems with proactive monitoring and observability, builds with supportability in mind. Set standards for operating procedures and advises on best practices for engineers.
- Support team activities (daily standups, tech huddle topics, desk checks) and pairing with peers to work on stories
- Regularly evaluates current business processes, applications, systems, and identifies potential improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Uses each task/story as an opportunity to embed improvements.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to junior engineers
You Have
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- 5 years of configuration and/or development experience in broad range of hardware & software products.
- Strong ability to design, develop, test, and deploy applications/systems using proven or technologies within variety of technologies and environments. Expert knowledge of specific programming languages and techniques. Works autonomously with limited guidance.
- Directs the application of existing principles and guides development of new policies and ideas.
- Strong troubleshooting (within multiple systems) and problem-solving skills.
- Embeds data analytics capabilities and understanding of key business data models
- Proficiency in S/4 HANA, ABAP, Development a plus
- Proficiency in the SAP Business Technology Platforma plus
- A continuous improvement mindset to drive more effective, automated software delivery
- The ability to work autonomously in areas of ambiguity, bringing clarity to explain complex technical concepts to all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated experience exploring, facilitating approval of, and deploying and operationalizing new technology platforms and practices.
- Demonstrated experience assessing off the shelf solutions as alternatives to custom development.
