The Work You Will Do:
The Engineering Specialist III (37940107) is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration's Scientific Support Services in Tallahassee and will be responsible for performing routine technical work using simple engineering practices and equipment. This position assists the FDEP Laboratory's resident engineer with maintenance of the
laboratory's infrastructure, administration of the hazardous waste management program, the performance of safety inspections and other related duties. The incumbent must be capable of mechanical reasoning, making decisions and able to follow directions. Medical monitoring is required.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position performs routine technical work using simple engineering practices and equipment. This position assists the FDEP Laboratory's resident engineer with maintenance of the laboratory's infrastructure, administration of the hazardous waste management program, the performance of safety inspections and other related duties. The incumbent must be capable of mechanical reasoning, making decisions and able to follow directions. Medical monitoring is required.
Assists the laboratory's engineer with construction and building renovation. Responsible for helping with the maintenance of critical laboratory support systems, including compressed gas and de-ionized water delivery systems as well as laboratory fume exhaust systems.
Assists the Laboratory Receiving Operation by participating in sample kit packing activities, VOC vial preparation and the processing of coolers received once samples have been removed.
Assists with the maintenance of the Laboratory safety program; Conducts regular inspections of laboratory fume hoods, fire suppression equipment and laboratory safety stations; Assists with laboratory safety audits as directed; Helps with safety audits of other Division activities as directed.
Helps the laboratory engineer maintain and update the laboratory's hazardous waste management plan as necessary; Ensures that spill kits are deployed in the FDEP Laboratory as appropriate; Assists with the disposal of hazardous wastes.
Assists with the inventory of laboratory equipment; Helps with the transfer or disposal of inventoried property.
Performs other related duties as directed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of basic mathematics.
2. Ability to take measurements and calculate quantities using a hand-held
calculator.
3. Ability to walk, bend, stoop, squat push and crawl on all types of terrain in a
variety of weather conditions.
4. Ability to climb ascending and descending heights or depths up to 20 feet in a safe
manner.
5. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
6. Ability to be dependable, reliable and to work independently.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and
work as a team player.
8. Ability to complete work assignments in an established time frame.
9. Ability to communicate information effectively both verbally and in writing.
10. Ability to work overtime, nights, holidays, and weekends on short notice.
11. Ability to maintain a State of Florida Class "E" driver's license.
12. Ability to participate in the DEP Medical Monitoring Program.
Required or Preferred Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalent, and 3 years of verifiable related work experience, as described in this posting.
