Job Summary:

The Director of Hardware Engineering is responsible for leading and managing the Electrical Engineering team, and coordinating with the Test, RF, and Firmware teams. This role ensures the successful development and maintenance of hardware products. The Director will drive innovation, maintain high-quality standards, and ensure efficient project execution within the engineering department.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and manage the Electrical Engineering team.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Oversee the design, development, and testing of hardware components.
  • Manage schematic capture and PCB layout processes.
  • Ensure timely procurement and testing of PCB and PCBA samples through the electrical engineering group.
  • Conduct or direct design reviews, development of test plans, and generation of test reports.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Incorporate best practices in product development, including miniaturization, power management, and ergonomic design.
  • Ensure accurate and reliable product performance, testing, and analysis.
  • Manage the sustaining engineering efforts to maintain, improve and support existing products.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize processes and improve product acceptance rates.
  • Manage multiple projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Monitor project progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Report on project status, including key performance metrics and milestones.

Experience and Skills:

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proven leadership experience in engineering, with a focus on electrical.
  • Experience in electrical designs containing cellular, Bluetooth, WiFi and GNSS systems.
  • Experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, and managing PCB and PCBA samples.
  • Experience with sustaining engineering and hardware lifecycle management.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of hardware test engineering, including building test systems using a combination of off-the-shelf and custom-made hardware, and measurements through LabVIEW.
  • Understanding of RF equipment and measurements, including network analyzers, CMW500, RF power meters, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Knowledge of antenna theory and measurements such as TRP, TIS, gain, and efficiency.
  • Experience in wearable product development, including miniaturization, power management, and ergonomic design.
  • Knowledge of C# and Python, as well as software design principles such as SOLID principles, dependency injection, MVC software architectures, and object-oriented programming.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree a plus.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering, including 5+ years in a leadership or management role.
  • Proven track record of successful hardware product development and sustaining engineering.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and industry standards for hardware products.
  • Familiarity with modern hardware design, test tools and methodologies.
